Hold UCLA accountable

Sheri Sangji's death 18 days after a preventable lab fire at UCLA highlights the lack of safety standards and enforcement in academic labs, which puts thousands of students, postdoctoral researchers, and staff at risk of injury or death. The Sangji family deserves justice and lab workers, a safe work place. Criminal liability and punishment will lead UCLA and other universities to establish more effective systems of safety. The defendants in this case should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

    3. Arraignment postponed to July 13th - 5th continuance granted in this case

The DA and the defense continue to negotiate; however, Sheri's sister has been told that they are near an agreement. The judge has asked for a progress report on the 2nd of July, and the arraignment is scheduled to follow on the 13th. This gives us more time to circulate the petition and keep up the pressure on the DA's office. Please help by asking your friends and family to sign and circulating it on your Facebook or other social media web sites. At stake are justice for Sheri and her family and the health and safety of thousands of young lab workers in academic labs across the nation.

    4. Arraignment of defendants on June 7th

      Judith Sweeney

The defendants will enter a plea at that time. Please send this petition to your friends and family and post to Facebook, Twitter, or wherever you can. We must keep the pressure on the DA to not let this case die--not only for Sheri and her family but also for thousands of young people around the country and around the world who work in academic labs. These labs are unregulated and largely unsafe. The Los Angeles County District Attorney has the unique opportunity to send the universities that run them a wake-up call simply by prosecuting the defendants in accordance with the law.

I work at UC Santa Barbara's Physics Department. I know the value in lab safety, and I know adequate safety measures are not widely employed at UC labs.
