On 12/07/2012 I took my son, Jeremy Ryan Albright, last four 1292, DOB 01/09/1987 to his regular Friday med visit with Dr. Richard Cranston. Jeremy had been bed ridden for about 1 week and unable to walk due to severe leg pain so I brought him in a wheel chair. He also had dark urine and a metallic/ammonia taste in his mouth. As usual we went to the lab for a blood draw before seeing Dr. Cranston. Labs on that day revealed abnormalities, and Dr. Cranston acknowledged this in his notes (see attached pages 1 and 2). He also noted other symptoms Jeremy told him about on the 7th which included inability to walk and metallic/ammonia taste in mouth. Why were these red flags not immediately addressed on the 7th? I am not a medical professional but a quick Google search tells of the possible life threatening conditions associated with these symptoms. The VA’s documented knowledge of Jeremy’s long struggle with severe mental illness (paranoid schizophrenia) and alcoholism should have also been

His health did not improve over the next 48 hours so on December 9th, 2012 we went to the Loma Linda VA emergency room. Upon admission we described his symptoms – dark urine, unable to walk, metallic/ammonia taste in mouth, vomiting, not able to eat. No testing was done, they just assumed he was dehydrated and gave him an IV, antibiotics and sent him home. I now realize that when in the emergency room Jeremy was already in renal failure or experiencing some other life threatening condition. He was just shuffled through and sent home.
Another 24 hours passed and Jeremy had not improved so I decided on the evening of December 10th that I would take the following day off and bring him back to the VA emergency room. When I checked on him in his room at about 8:30am on December 11, 2012 I found him unresponsive and knew in my heart he was already deceased.

I called 911 and they arrived, started treatment at the house then rushed him to Kaiser ER in Moreno Valley, where they got a heartbeat but he never regained consciousness and heartbeat was only artificial. After 3 days we had to make the difficult decision to stop life support and say goodbye to our loved one.
I feel if I had brought him to Kaiser on the 9th instead of the VA and given them the same symptoms his life could have been saved. All it would have taken was for someone to listen and realize a blood test was needed to see what was going on. We put our faith in the VA because Jeremy was a veteran who served his country in Iraq and thought he would be treated with respect and given the medical care he needed in those last few days to save his life. We were wrong in doing so.

How can a 25 year old young man show up with those symptoms and be given such non-caring treatment? Not even a blood test to see what is going on? A diagnosis based on assumptions which resulted in him losing his life? Those are the questions I need answers to for December 7th and 9th, 2012. The VA had all the signs and information laid out before them but did nothing with that information. It seems if you don’t have a gunshot wound or a knife sticking out of your chest you’ll just be sent on your way.
      Thank you,
      David Albright

Its totally unacceptable that a hospital is either clueless, careless, ignorant to a patients health, you undertook an oath to care for someone, irrespective of their condition, so please do the right thing and take of a patient

This is the story of a good friend's son...and I am a witness to how David always went out of his way to take care of Jeremy. This is a good wake up call...
