Little Heart's Education: Animal Appreciation Week In Schools To Help End Animal Cruelty

    1. Petition by

      Michelle Clayman

      Lakewood, OH

This petition is dedicated to the kitten lovingly named 'Little Heart', who was savagely beaten and nearly stabbed in Virginia by a 12 year old boy. Another child intervened in time to knock the blade from the 12 year olds hands, sparing the kitten from even more unspeakable torture. The kitten suffered a broken leg, and has since passed on. As of 06/03/2011, it is unclear whether or not the horrific abuse bestowed upon the kitten contributed to it's death. As of right now, the child has only been charged with one misdemeanor count of cruelty.

Sadly, this sort of case happens more often that we think. Adults are not taking enough time to educate their children of the wrongs of Animal Cruelty. I say that schools should be required to have an annual 'Animal Appreciation week', where the children learn more about animals and animal welfare. There should also be a focus on educating them about the wrongs of Animal Cruelty, and teach them how they can help animals instead of hurt them.

One of my suggestions for an idea would include learning about how animals help people, such as therapy dogs, police dogs, guide dogs, etc.

I believe that by working to educate today's youth, we are helping to prevent violent crimes in the future. We are not only helping to prevent cruelty to animals, but cruelty to other human beings. It has been proven that many children who commit cruel acts on animals later commit cruel acts on other humans. Let's help stop the chain of violence before it starts! Let's help make a brighter tomorrow.

My goal is to see Animal Appreciation week in schools become required by all schools. But, even if one school VOLUNTEERS to have an Animal Appreciation week , that  week could still save so many lives. Please sign this petition to help educate the children about animals and animal cruelty.

This kid is not normal and a future threat to us. His actions is not a part of growing up, but a look into the kind of person he will become if not taught correctly to respect all living things.

Yes, stop them before they do this to humans. But I doubt that you can teach it to them, maybe scare them.

Children need to be taught that all life, including the life of animals, is precious, and to be treated as such. Compassion, kindness and empathy need to be valued in our society, and children need to witness these values at an early age. When children abuse or murder an animal, their potential for committing violence against a human increases. Let's help the younger generations embrace and appreciate life.

So there will be no more Little Hearts or Dexters!

Somehow so many so called humans are not being reared with values that would prevent them from ever committing such cruel acts. Maybe--I hope--putting emphasis on such things in school will at least help some!
