Stop Selling Our Homes

    1. Petition by

      John Hamilton

      London, United Kingdom

We, residents of the Borough of Lewisham, are appalled that the Council is selling off good housing stock while 50 homeless families are in B&B,
350 are in hostels and a further 1000 families are in temporary housing.
We fully support the occupation of five council houses to stop their sell-off at auction at knock-down prices.
We call upon Lewisham Council to ensure that ALL the council’s housing is made available to rent by the 16,500 people on the housing waiting list.
Where refurbishment is necessary local people should be employed and training opportunities created for unemployed people to learn skills.

Dear Signatory to the petition about Lewisham's housing crisis,
As you know, the Mayor has reversed his earlier decision to sell the houses we occupied in February. We were going to hand in the petition at the council meeting this coming Thursday, 28th June, but instead want to hand in a Thank You card on behalf of everyone who signed the paper and the electronic petitions.
We have also printed 15,000 postcards for distribution at schools, stations and door-to-door publicising the successful campaign and also a Housing Conference which will take place on 15th September and which will be open to people from all over London and beyond who want to come up with solutions to the housing crisis.
Please help us to distribute these cards. We will have a stall at Hilly Fields today (23rd June) and next Saturday at Bellingham Green.
Do come to the Art Exhibition/Street Party tomorrow, 24th June, at Harts Lane Occupied Studios, 2-5pm
Contact me on John@PeopleBeforeProfit.org.uk if you can help.

    3. Family moves in!

We have brought the house at 7 Angus Street up to standard for a family to move in. This involved fitting a new bathroom and decorating as well as fitting a hob and cooker hood.
We would like to hand over responsibility for refurbishing the other houses to a social enterprise and two have already approached us. We need to negotiate this with the council who are currently saying they won't talk to us. Can you write an email to Cllr_susan.wise@lewisham.gov.uk or mayor@lewisham.gov.uk to ask them to discuss these plans with us?

shelter should be for all, not a privilege of those with money - no 'devil take the hindmost'.

How do you feel about Lewisham council tax payers subsidising your political activism? When the squatters get evicted, and they will, it will be council tax payers that foot the bill. As a result, there will be a little less money to spend on schools, or refuse collection, or social services, or libraries, or street cleaning...you get the idea. Will this be published?

There is absolutely no affordable housing in the borough and the council waiting lists are forever.

I firmly believe in the philosophy behind this campaign. I would also like to be kept up to date with any developments through my email if possible.
