APEX Academy is a small LAUSD high school serving low income students in Hollywood, CA. APEX has shown great success with these students, many who are the first in their family to graduate from high school, let alone attend college. APEX has a strong track record of successfully working with students who have slipped through the cracks at traditional comprehensive high schools. Our students are graduating and going to universities because we do not give up on them! Without APEX, that may not continue.

Due to severe budget cuts in the LAUSD, APEX Academy will no longer be able to successfully serve its students and families if it remains with the district. The cuts are just too large.   In order to SAVE APEX and continue to serve these students we believe in, APEX has applied to become an independent public charter high school in 2012-2013. This gives us control over our own finances, allowing us to provide resources and support for our students and their families that the district cannot. Even though there is significant data documenting our success, LAUSD has moved to deny the charter petition. This decision is political, and IS NOT based upon the merits of the charter petition, or what is educationally best for our students. We are a fully accredited public school that is meeting all AYP/API (state and federal measures) goals while implementing the innovative Diploma Plus model. During the 4 years since our opening, we have built a strong and meaningful relationship with the community. Many of our students have very little – but they do have a school that is committed to their success.

With nearly 90% of the credentialed APEX Academy staff (teachers and counselors) in favor of the charter, and the overwhelming support of our families and community YOU can make a difference as the LAUSD Board of Education holds the final vote on this denial recommendation. Help us tell the LAUSD Board of Education that APEX Academy students deserve the opportunity to keep their school and continue working towards their educational goals.

Please sign our petition and show our students you believe in them too!

REMOVE and BREAK UP LAUSD. Smaller groups will do a better job. Give the community back the responsibility of education their kids. If your efforts make they look bad, they want you out. San Pedro High rated 10, last place, LAUSD. NO MORE LAUSD in our kids lives.

My good friend Lillian works hard for these kids and she deserves to have a place to continue doing that. These kids also deserve to have a teacher as incredible as she is.

I am signing because I believe in providing educational opportunities for all. Being a first generation college student, under the guidance of caring college counselors like Rachel Livingston and a group of other staff who believed in me enabled me to develop the skills and confidence to help myself. As an aspiring educator at USC and having volunteered with APEX, I believe these students deserve the same.
