Lady Gaga: Change Venue of Philippine Concert

    1. Petition by

      Rain Drop

The Born This Way Ball Tour Lady Gaga Live in Manila (concert) on May 21, 2012 will be held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. But SM is destroying the environment, and every cent that SM earns is partly used to kill trees and dislocate the poor.

Lady Gaga fans who care for the environment should not give up on the environment when supporting the concert.

    4. SM Megamall flash mob planned in two days, thanks to Facebook, Twitter

Thanks to Facebook, Twitter, and text-messaging, four people were able to plan a small lightning rally inside the Philippines’ third-largest mall - and even print shirts for the occasion - in two days.

The 125-strong flash mob assembled at six locations inside SM Megamall at around seven o’ clock on Friday evening, temporarily eluding security to express their sentiments: that they were against mall management’s plans to cut 182 trees in its branch in Baguio, also known as the City of Pines.

    5. Protests vs. SM Baguio spill over to SM Megamall in Mandaluyong

Organized through social networking sites, some 125 artists, environmentalists and concerned citizens held a ‘silent’ protest at the SM Megamall Friday night against the cutting of pine trees at the SM mall in Baguio City.

“We held a very silent protest against the cutting of pine trees in Baguio,” Julia Enriquez, one of the protest’s organizers told GMA News Online Wednesday via phone interview.

For "maximum visibility," the protesters wore statement shirts while at the mall’s "strategic" locations.

    7. Militant group slams violent dispersal at SM Mall of Asia

"Militant group Anakbayan-National Capital Region said Friday that it condemns the violent dispersal of rallyists and some members of the media in the anti-demolition and anti-tree cutting rally Thursday at the SM Mall of Asia.

"In a statement, Anakbayan-NCR said almost a hundred security personnel “violently” dispersed the lightning rally of some 40 youths led by Anakbayan-NCR who are standing against the cutting of trees in SM Baguio."

    8. Video: Occupy SM North EDSA marred with violence

"Kalikasan Partylist, the Kalikasan People's Network for the Environment, and Kabataan Partylist led an Occupy SM North EDSA action in solidarity with Baguio citizens opposed to the tree-balling of 182 Pine and Japanese Alder trees in SM Baguio.

"We were drowned out with a powerful sound system, and were "kettled" - surrounded by security personnel and shoved out of the premises. In the process of dispersal, an activist was punched, a photo-documentor was strangled, and the protest's sound system and a mobile phone was severely damaged."

    9. Bloody demolition: For socialized housing or business?

"Since the city does not have the resources to build the project, Bernabe explained that it initially eyed SM Development Corp (SMDC), the real estate firm of mall tycoon Henry Sy, to develop the property.

"What prospered was a partnership with the state-run National Housing Authority (NHA), which will provide the funds for the housing component of the project and bid it out among developers.

"SMDC came in the picture again after the NHA required Parañaque to identify a prospective partner for the project."

    10. After Baguio tree-cutting, SM linked to Paranaque demolition

"After getting in hot water for supposedly cutting trees for a mall expansion in Baguio City, the group is now being linked to a violent demolition in Parañaque that left 1 dead and several others injured on Monday, April 23.

"Sheila Bernal, president of a homeowners association in Silverio Compound, where the violence erupted, claimed that a mid-rise condominium will be erected in the contested area by SM Development Corp. (SMDC), the property development arm of SM Investment Corp."

    11. SM uproots trees in Baguio, triggers protests

"SM has uprooted about 8 trees from Luneta Hill in Baguio City to pave the way for the mall's expansion there, protesters said.

"Workers began the earth-balling of the trees at about 10 pm Monday night, April 9, according to Baguio residents on Twitter."

    12. Protest vs SM Baguio taps Twitter power

      From Rappler:

"Thousands protested against plans to redevelop and take down more than a hundred trees on Luneta Hill – to make way for a new SM City Baguio parking lot and entertainment plaza.

"Multisectoral groups joined the protest even as a petition to stop a Department of Environment and Natural Resources permit that allows SM Development Corp to cut, ball or prune trees went online."

    13. The Artist Abroad: Cutting down trees is an SM act

From New York, Luis H. Francia writes thus:

"When it comes to trees, everyone concerned with the environment agrees that the more of them there are, the better. The floods and the subsequent deaths in Mindanao from a ferocious typhoon in late 2011 unsurprisingly resulted from long-time illegal logging, tragically illustrating, yet again, that the Philippines has one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world."

SM is also building a condo in Paranaque, but to do that it has to demolish homes first. Unarmed teen protester gets shot.
