Stop Kenyon from partnering with Sodexo

We demand that Kenyon protect its staff and seek an alternative to outsourcing them to Sodexo because of its troubling record. Since many community members cannot attend the upcoming forum, we hope our voices are heard through this petition. We support the staff of our college and they play a huge part of our Kenyon experience, especially for students. We demand that the jobs of such integral members of our community are not outsourced to such a dubious organization. Not only will this create issues with regards to quality control, transparency, efficiency, communication, fairness, but the repercussions of such a decision will have lasting consequences on Kenyon’s reputation. This is evidenced by Robb Forman Dew’s decision to take her planned gift to the school elsewhere as well as urge other writers to boycott any invitation to speak at a Kenyon College Commencement.

Kenyon is a community, not a corporation and we demand that it behave like a community, treating each of its members with the decency and respect they deserve.

      I am an employee of Sodexho and I know exactly what goes on in a place like that. I have worked for Sodexho for three years. With no raise, no benefits, nothing. While they do indeed offer benefits, I have decided not to take them, as the insurance would be so high, I couldn't afford anything. The working conditions are extremely horrible, the pay is literally nothing, I have asked for a raise several times, I've been deined each ti,e. I just want things to change. For the good of all employees that work at Sodexho.

      As a member of the class of 1967 at Kenyon, I am appalled at the proposed outsourcing of maintenance work to Sodexo. I can well remember as an entering freshman nearly 50 years ago, the emphasis Kenyon's leaders put on the concept of "collegium"" and the value placed on all members of the Kenyon community. Evidently that no longer seems to apply to the maintenance workforce, who have always performed in an exemplary fashion vital work that is essential to the college's ability to function.

      Shortsighted cost cutting at the expense of enduring quality has never been Kenyon's way. Now is no time to start.
