Save the weather beacon

KCCI (who cares about the community) and the Hearst Corporation informed those in the Des Moines viewers market that on September 27, 2012, the beloved weather beacon would go dark. In doing such, they did the city, the people of Des Moines, all Iowans and those who grew up here and are scattered across the globe a disservice by not explaining that this has been an issue for years.

Rather, we were informed the beacon would be going dark, meaning a beloved landmark and "you're home" signal would be gone. And that's just wrong.

KCCI/Hearst Television should "care about the community" enough to hear the community and our concerns about the issue. A discussion on how to raise funds to save (repair) the beacon or rebuild it should take place before the demolition of the beacon.

I grew up in Des Moines and learned the weather beacon song as a child. Now living overseas the weather beacon was something that I remembered fondly from home and expected to see when I came home for visits. I hope that the weather becon can again light up the night sky.

This has been a landmark and bragging point for a good portion of my life. I feel it is important to hold on to for posterity.

It is part of my history of growing up in Des Moines. I remember when they shut it down in the 70"s and it was like losing an old friend then. When they turned it back on...life as we know it was complete again in Des Moines:)

I grew up with this steady thing in my life when nothing else ever seemed to stick around
