Karl McCartney must retract his comments on gay marriage

Karl McCartney, it is reported that you explicitly opposed gay marriage and indicated that you will attempt to lobby fellow MPs to vote against plans for legislative change. We want you to retract your comments in public and apologise for suggesting equal marriage could lead to bigamy and under-age marriage: "Nor are you advocating multi-partnership marriages, not a reduction in the age of permitted marriage. But if one takes your 'arguments' to any conclusion that is where we could end up."

The Huffington Post reports (http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2012/04/20/karl-mccartney_n_1439781.html?ref=uk): A Conservative MP has said if gay marriage was allowed then it would open the door to bigamy or underage child marriage and that the cause of equal rights for gay people has been "exhausted".

In a letter sent to a constituent after they asked him to support the government's plans to introduce same-sex marriage, Karl McCartney said it would have the effect of "uprooting thousands of years of Christian tradition".

"You raised concerns that the law, in its current form, discriminated against those in civil partnerships," he said.

"However in my opinion, the LGBT community have exhausted the cause of equal rights and have now picked on an issue which would possibly only affect a few thousand people every year."

The Lincoln MP said that while he applauded the changes made and achieved by the LGBT community in recent decades he was concerned that further changes would "harm the progress that has largely been made for little real gain".

By petitioning you, I hope that you understand the seriousness of my disappointment in your comments.

I believe if people love each other truly and want to make a commitment to each other, what's the problem? I think religion and people's beliefs should encourage all to be equal. Stop being so prehistoric!!!

Because he is an MP he should be sending out a positive message not enforcing bigotry.
