Return Employee Pensions To United Airlines

To the Director of the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation, now that United Airlines is profitable and has over $8 billion in cash, make United take back and restore its employee pension plans.
During bankruptcy, United Airlines terminated its employee pension plans and handed them to the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation (PBGC), resulting in up to 80% losses of benefits for retirees. United violated PBGC rules by stating its frequent flyer program was nearly a $400 million liability, its book value, when it should have been shown as a $7 billion asset, its market value as per PBGC requirements. Part of that program could have been sold, as Air Canada did, with that money used to fund its pensions. Now United is highly profitable and has over $8 billion in cash. The PBGC, funded to a great extent by American taxpayers, has the authority to make United take back and restore its pension plans, greatly improving the quality of life for United retirees and removing that liability from taxpayers.

      I have been an employee of UAL for 26 years. I have had 7 different CEO's during this time and all have walked away with "Golden Parachutes". At the time I lost my pension, I had 19.5 years of service. The PBGC only credited me with 16.5. WHAT?!? Well, apparently I was penalized 1 year for each time I was off on maternity leave. It obviously didn't matter that I was still employed, covered medically by insurance for which UAL and I paid for and I still had flight benefits! Why was I penalized for being pregnant on authorized, temporary leave of absence? Was this a form of discrimination? It's shameful enough that United kicked its employees to the curb regarding our pensions but then to be penalized for maternity leaves on top of that is even worse! From my understanding, the PBGC was intended to be a temporary housing source for companies that were having financial difficulties to say the very least. United broke the mold wan they dumped our pensions and placed a clause into the mix that would not allow the PBGC to give the pensions back! The PBGC should not only give UAL back its pensions, but both UAL and the PBGC should reimburse the employees for the losses in pension funding during the years it's been housed with the PBGC. Do the right thing for once and get rid of that "Bain Capital" mentality. We matter too!
