Keep Edinburgh Picture House as a live music venue!

      Edinburgh, United Kingdom

As both a musician and a member of bar staff, I am devastated to hear that my beloved place of employment and a key music venue in Edinburgh city centre has been sold of to become a Wetherspoons.

The last thing this city needs is a key music venue, as well as the Edinburgh Music scene to be tarnished!

The Picture House has a musical history stretching back three decades and has brought the best international acts to the Scottish capital with acts as diverse as Franz Ferdinand to Amadou and Mariam having graced its stage.

More recently, big names such as Panic! At The Disco, Deaf Havana, Frightened Rabbit, Basement Jaxx, The Editors, Sleeping With Sirens and Amy MacDonald have all performed to over 1000 music fans.

During the seventies and eighties it was known as The Caley Palais and hosted gigs by some of the biggest name artists of its generation including New Order, The Smiths, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Orange Juice, Queen and AC/DC.

I refuse to stand by and watch decades of live music history be tarnished all in the name of a burger and a pint for £6!

Without the Edinburgh Picture House, That band that you've waited ages to see will be through in Glasgow, resulting in increased costs for music lovers who now have to leave events early in order to catch the last bus or train at ridiculous o'clock for around £10/£15 extra.

Signing this petition shows that you are as passionate about music as you are The City Of Edinburgh, who needs to keep such a historic venue alive!

Please JD Wetherspoons. For the sake of Edinburghs music scene, keep The Picture House as a live music venue!!

    1. Building the live music scene in Edinburgh - an opportunity to get involved!

Hello to all, hope this email update finds you in good health!

Since my last message, 140 comments have been left on the Edinburgh city council planning page for the proposed change of use for the Picture House, I would like to thank all of you for doing so!

Now, we play the waiting game, and while we wait to hear the council's decision on the Wetherspoons change of use proposal for the Picture House, a group of us are working hard to try to develop a social enterprise that will both bring major bands to our city and support music in the community.

We've come a long way already, but we would now benefit from having someone with finance/ accountancy skills involved. Could that be you? If you are interested, please email info@ecmp.org.uk for more information.

Thank you again for all your help and support!

How to actually save the Picture House

The big news in Edinburgh music this week was the announcement that MAMA are to sell The Picture House on Lothian Road to JD Wetherpoon, for conversion (presumably) into a pub. As outlined in the Evening News article above, the internet sprung immediately into action. There's a petition going around (of course) that, at time...

    7. 10,000!

      Callum Mouat
      Petition Organizer

Massive thanks again for making this hit 10,000 signatures!

I have decided that rather than presenting the petition now, I'm going to wait until Wetherspoons puts in building permission, as all building planning permissions can be viewed and voted for online. Once their application is live and can be viewed online, I will be printing the Petition and taking it down to the Edinburgh City Council building and delivering it to them stating that over 10,000 people are against their plans!

Keep spreading the word, You are all amazing!

Wow! This has truly become something amazing! I cannot even begin to describe how pleased I am at how this has all turned out!

I also have decided that when there are 10,000 signatures, I will be presenting the petition to Edinburgh City Council.

Thank you all so much for your continued support!

it's vital for Edinburgh to maintain good live music venues such as the Picture House, it's iconic and would be a devastating loss to the live music scene

This was the place where I first met the love of my life , in the queue for a gig!

The picture house is a great part of my life because without it , me and my boyfriend wouldn't have met!

Not to mention it's a brilliant venue that has seen a variety of talented artists perform!

To see the picture house be pushed into such a degrading state would crush so many memories. Including mine.

We need to keep both music and love alive
