NO DONKEYS AT VAN HORN FRONTIER DAYS!!! Great news. You did it! You got it cancelled. I just off the phone with a petition supporter who has been at Frontier Days in Van Horn both days. SHE HAS CONFIRMED THAT THE DONKEY ROPING EVENT WAS CANCELLED. THERE WERE NO DONKEYS THERE. She also let me know that Jason seems like a nice young man who truly did not see anything wrong with this event. He bought the donkeys from a holding area at/near El Paso Tx. She feels he truly thought he was saving the donkeys from slaughter and at the same time, being an entrepreneur, adding something to their Frontier Days. SHE BELIEVES THE BEST THING NOW IS TO HELP EDUCATE JASON, THE CITY OF VAN HORN AND IT'S CITIZENS ON WHY DONKEYS ARE NOT SUITED PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY FOR ROPING. AND MORE SPECIFICALLY ON WAYS TO PROMOTE POSITIVE EVENTS FOR THE DONKEYS FOR 2013 LIKE CARTING AMONG MANY OTHERS. TO EMPHASIZE THE LONG HISTORY OF 'LONGEARS' IN THE SETTLEMENT OF WEST TEXAS. LET US ALL THANK JASON OWEN AND CITY FOR CANCELLING. What needs to ultimately happen is for the law to change. I am hoping to start a new petition to put pressure on the law makers and law enforcers to see specific legislation banning donkey roping of any kind, public as in the rodeos or in private. I will email all of you with that information and I hope you will be as vigilant with your support on that as you have been with this petition. After all we wouldn't need to single out all the specific towns or events if there was law. We need to let the City of Van Horn and Jason know that they did the right thing by cancelling. Jason is a symptom of the problem rather than the cAUe. Cruelty for entertainment is a worldwide cultural phenomenon. I have asked the petition supporter who went to Van Horn to write up her experience so I can share it with all of you. In response to the many of you who have contacted me about finding out how much money Jason wants for the donkeys so a donation drive can be started, this is what I have learned. NOT ONLY IS IT THE POLICY OF PVDR BUT EVERY RESCUE I CONTACTED THAT THEY DO NOT ACCEPT FOR SURRENDER DONKEYS OR HORSES ETC THAT HAVE BEEN PURCHASED. THIS RESCUES ARE IN AGREEMENT THAT THE PEOPLE DOING SO EXPLOIT THOSE OF US WILLING TO PAY FOR THEM. That is why we need to find positive events for these donkeys to take part in. Thank you all for signatures and support. Di

Donkey roping is an extremely cruel "sport" where the donkey is shocked with a cattle prod until he tries to run away. Once in motion two people on horseback run the donkey down, one throwing a rope around its neck, the other around its rear legs. Once roped the donkey is then stretched between the two horses. Broken bones and death are all too common during these events.

This petition was created to stop a ‘world championship donkey roping’ event in Van Horn Texas at the Frontiers Days on June 23-24, 2012.

It should be noted that the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association does NOT condone donkey roping.  This is not and never has been an officially sanctioned event.  It is an event created by some for money making purposes.  Donkeys in Texas can be bought for as low as $5.00 whereas cattle/calves are very expensive.  Calves are generally used only once or twice so as not to damage them.  Donkeys are used over and over compounding the damage done to their bodies and minds.

Donkeys are equine, like horses, their physical makeup – anatomy, is not like a cow.  Their joints articulate differently. They have a long cervical spine (neck) easily broken when being roped and stretched between two horses who weigh 3-6 times as much as a donkey.  Roping or lassoing is a fine art and has to be performed in a particular manner having parts of the rope land in correct locations ON CATTLE.  These specific locations on a cow are different that on a donkey or don’t exist at all.

Death, broken necks, legs and backs are common in donkey roping.  Their tracheas (windpipes) are exposed, not buried deeply in the neck structure as are cows, so they are crushed and they suffocate.  They can’t eat for days because their throats are swollen.  Their legs are delicate and easily broken.  Their hides (skins) are not thick like cattle so the ropes cause burns, abrasions, blisters.

For those that survive this physical torture they are guaranteed to suffer from psychological issues.  They ‘shut down’ mentally, display severe distrust issues.  Their minds and hearts are naturally trusting and they desire to be with humans. The behavior of these men is a betrayal; the donkeys don’t know how to differentiate between these torturers and the loving rescuers/caregivers.  It can take years and sometimes never for them to trust another human.  They often segregate themselves from other donkeys by hiding in corners of their pastures or stalls, not being able to socialize with their own kind.

These donkey roping events occur all over Texas, not just in Van Horn.  They also occur in some other ‘cowboy-minded’ states but not at the same frequency as they do in Texas.

The ultimate goal will be to get legislation passed that makes donkey roping event illegal and then to make certain that law in enforced.  There is a Tx Statue 42.09 cruelty to livestock animal that should cover this but the law needs to specific like with ‘horse-tripping’.  These events are often help in small communities where the local Sheriff is everybody’s friend, maybe even partakes in the event, and therefore does NOTHING to enforce 42.09.

This petition was successful in stopping the donkey roping event in Van Horn for their Frontier Days weekend June 23-24, 2012 therefore I will be ending it today.

I hope to work for legislation aimed directly at banning donkey roping at any event, public or private, in Texas.

The supporters of this petition still want Jason Owen to relinquish all of the donkeys to a donkey rescue to insure their care and rehabilitation from the torture of being roped.

They would also like some confirmation that Jason, and the City of Van Horn, will never again be involved with or promote a donkey roping event. Many people have offered to help Jason and the city to promote the positive aspect of donkeys and mules in the settlement of West Texas.

Jason Owen told Newswest9 in his interview that he "bought them off a slaughter truck and they were "skin and bones" Assuming that this was even true, why would anyone waste their time slaughtering skinny donkeys? If you are going to harvest something for its meat, wouldn't you want them fat and happy?

Here are all facts according to the Presidio USDA inspector who is a friend of Mark Meyers of PVDR:

"Slaughter is off the table. From Van Horn the only crossing into Mexico is through Presidio. Slaughter bound trucks never carry donkeys. The only donkeys that have crossed for slaughter were picked up close to the border and transported to a village where they were slaughtered for local consumption as cheap meat. "

Please help in politely convincing Jason to give the donkeys to PVDR.

I still have no official confirmation from Jason Owen that he has agreed to cancel the donkey roping event. I only have the emails from 2 city officials that they have canceled event.

I am removing 8 of the 9 targets of this petition but leaving Jason on there. Mainly because he told a reporter that he refuses to relinquish the donkeys to any rescue. I feel for this petition to be a complete success that jason must surrender the donkeys so they get the appropriate veterinary care & rehabilitation that they require after having endured the torture of being roped. So please keep POLITE pressure on Jason to give ALL his donkeys to PVDR or another donkey rescue. Again his contact info is 432-940-9051 & thedollarj@hotmail.com

I was contacted by KWES ,NBC affiliate for a phone interview today for a broadcast tonight. Mark Meyers of PVDR has kindly offered to step in and do the interview. Jason was interviewed this morning for the interview as well. www.newswest9.com after 7 pm cst

from continued.............I also pointed out that there are photos and video (now password blocked) on http://www.justhorsinaroundphotography.com/p676930534/e17b0fa5e#h17b0fa5e clearing showing
donkeys being roped in Van Horn last July 2011.

I view this as a victory, partially. We need to get these donkeys to Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue, we need a confirmation and promise from Jason Owen that he will not participate in any other donkey roping event EVER, meaning by purchasing donkeys for or promoting donkeys in a roping event.

Next we need this to stop all over Texas, and any other states that allows it. We need to pressure the law enforcement of Texas to actually enforce statue 42.09 http://donkeyrescue.donordrive.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=cms.page&id=1122

ALL OF YOU ARE TO BE THANKED AND HUGGED, AND NUZZLED BY A DONKEY, FOR HELPING THESE DONKEYS. My most sincerest thanks and regards, Diana Reese

The Town of Van Horn has heard the voice of all concerned and has convinced the promoter to cancel the event. Thank you for your concern, but be aware that Van Horn had nothing to do with this event and does not believe in promoting cruelty to animal.

I responded to Ms. Morales with the link to the promo poster https://donkeyrescue.donordrive.com/assets/donkeyrescue/images/$cms$/100/1459.jpg CLEARLY indicating that this event was PROUDLY PRESENTED BY THE VAN HORN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND CITY OF VAN HORN TX. CONTINUED ON ANOTHER UPDATE

I want to recommend that Jason Owen be politely encouraged to relinquish the 45+- donkeys to PVDR.

PLEASE go here http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-804321 scroll down and click "THIS BELONGS ON CNN". this is an iReport submitted to CNN. If it gets enough support CNN will run it. I don't think I need to tell you how much pressure a report on CNN could bring.

Also I spoke with a gentlemen from KWES a NBC affiliate in west texas. He asked for all the information and feels positive about doing a story and maybe going to Van Horn. Lets keep the pressure on folks! THANK YOU ALL FOR SIGNING AND PASSING ALONG. IT'S BECAUSE OF YOU THAT THIS HAS GOTTEN SO FAR.

We have no word yet from Van Horn COC or Jason Owens if this event has been cancelled. It appears the Van Horn Advocate is published on Thursdays so we probably won't see any mention of the outcry to stop this donkey roping event until this coming Thursday June 21st. So don't let up, keep the pressure on by forwarding to groups & organizations you think will help, media too please!

The Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue of Texas was asked to take these abused donkeys once Jason Owens cancels the roping event & is ready to relinquish them to people who care about their welfare & have the means to help them recover. This will be a costly venture. You have supported this cause by signing the petition. Now would be the time to offer some financial support as well. As of this writing we 4500 signatures! Just think about it: if each one of you that signed this petition gave only 10.00 that would $45,000.00. Imagine if you gave more! go to http://donkeyrescue.donordrive.com

thanks to Stephanie Hanlon for making contact w/ Ms Golden at Van Horn COC, who has influence but is not the decision maker, she offered these suggestions: please direct phone calls to Jason Owen of Dos Gringo Prod 432-940-9051. He has the donkeys & allows them to be subjected to this life altering torture. He needs to understand how this permanently affects their life.

AS IMPORTANT is to direct emails to Larry Simpson, editor at The Van Horn Advocate: lsimpson@vanhornadvocate.com. Ms Golden needs to show the city administrator public pressure from the media, if she could show letters to the editor, it would go a long way.

Please remember: you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. All of you that have signed & called are understandably angry & appalled. It is easy to let our emotions takeover when trying to resolve such cruelty. Also lets remember not all Texans are part of this cruelty. There are great people in TX running needed rescues w/Texans as supporters. Di

I have read every one of the reasons you folks have written with your signatures. I am truly moved and brought to tears by many of the comments. And a RIGHT ON by others.

Prior to starting this campaign I personally spoke to Jason Owens, the promoter /Dos Gringos Productions. He claims the 45 donkeys he uses for this event are well taken care of! They are fed alfalfa (which any donkey person knows is a no-no). He somehow believes he is doing nothing wrong, That he is giving them a good life. These poor creatures have probably 'shutdown' from this abuse and he thinks that means they like it. He sees them solely as a money making venture, not as the loving trusting creatures that they are. I have been told that donkey roping is illegal in Texas and I will be looking into this on Thursday and if its true then who enforces it. I will keep you posted.

I am so amazed at all the overseas signatures too. please pass along to any organizations you belong to.

      Kindest Regards, Di
