Janet Napolitano: Protect Syrians Living in the United States

    1. Petition by

      Maha Hilal & Darakshan Raja

March 2012

Thanks to the 12,000 change- makers who signed this petition,  President Obama responded by granting Temporary Protected Status to Syrians living in the United States.  Now thousands of Syrians living and working in the US will no longer fear of possible deportation back to violence in Syria.

"We are overjoyed to see that over 12,000 people stood up against the violence in Syria by calling for the protection of Syrians in the US.  Temporary Protected Status ensures that Syrians here in the US wont have to fear the possibility of going home to violence and oppression. We are happy to know that many of our friends will no longer live in fear of being sent back to abuse in Syria."

- Maha Hilal

The situation in Syria is rapidly deteriorating. Every day Syrians experience torture, detention and even murder.  Over 7,000 Syrian civilians have been killed since March 2011 when the government began its repression against protesters.  In the last few months alone, thousands have been killed or detained simply for expressing their support for protests or their opposition to the regime.

Syrian immigrants living and working in the United States are now living in fear. If deported, they would be sent back to a country where they could be tortured or murdered for voicing their opinions. That is why we are calling on the Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, to grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrians living the United States. TPS would protect Syrian immigrants from the threat of deportation -- and possibly save their lives.

As  American citizens and human rights activists, who have often felt powerless in the face of the daily crackdown on the Syrian people, we  feel that it is our responsibility to speak out in support of the thousands of Syrian citizens in the US who currently live in fear of having to return to a country torn apart by violence.  By calling for the granting of TPS from the DHS, we feel that we can make a tangible and concrete difference in the lives of Syrians and fulfill our responsibility to protect Syrians living in the United States not only as American citizens, but as members of the global community.

This status would allow Syrians currently living in the US to remain here until the violence has subsided and not face a threat of being deported to Syria where they could face repression.  Temporary Protected Status would allow Syrians already in the United States to apply for permission to remain here for a limited time and work legally.

We are asking that TPS be applied to Syrians until such time when their safety can be fully guaranteed.  Further, we are requesting that the determination of safety and the cessation of TPS be as thorough a process as possible, so that we don’t put Syrians back in harms way.

Join us in calling on DHS Secretary Napolitano to protect Syrians in the US until the violence in Syria has ended.

Seven US Senators and many human rights organizations have all urged President Obama and Department of Homeland Security to protect Syrians in the United States, will you do the same?

I believe that the Syrian people should be able to have a free and democratic government of their own choosing.
