It's time to ban methyl iodide in California

Methyl iodide is a nasty chemical. It is a known neurotoxin and endocrine disruptor, can cause miscarriages, and scientists in labs handle only small amounts using special protective equipment because it is so toxic. But do you know where else it is used? As a pesticide for strawberries and other food crops.

Brian Leahy, a successful organic farmer, has just been appointed to head California's Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) by Gov. Brown.

For over a year, Gov. Brown has been refusing to take action on methyl iodide, saying that the decision must rest with the incoming head of DPR. With Mr. Leahy now in place, California is now poised to reverse the decision to approve methyl iodide for agricultural use.

Tell Governor Brown and Director Leahy: Ban methyl iodide.

The battle against methyl iodide is being fought on several fronts. Last summer, Washington state banned the use of the pesticide. Unfortunately, the pendulum swung the other way in California, when despite more than 53,000 public comments submitted, the state's Department of Pesticide Regulation approved the chemical for agricultural use last December.

There is little to debate about methyl iodide's toxicity. It is a known neurotoxin, disrupts thyroid function, damages developing fetuses, and has caused lung tumors in laboratory animals. Fumigating fields with the gas no doubt results in unacceptable exposures to farmworkers and surrounding populations.

Action in California, where over 90% of the country's strawberries are grown, will have national implications. In addition to closing off the major market, a California ban will give the EPA cover to re-evaluate this chemical in light of the increasing and overwhelming body of scientific evidence that methyl iodide has no safe place in agriculture.

Tell Governor Brown and Director Leahy: Ban methyl iodide.

Since methyl iodide was approved for agricultural use, the case against cancer-causing pesticide has only gotten stronger. Please ban methyl iodide for agricultural use.

Sincerely,
