Taleigh Smith: Friends, I am proud to share the news that the Northwest Bronx Community & Clergy Coalition has finally signed a Community Benefits Agreement for the Kingsbridge Armory! We believe it is the best in the nation and will set new precedent for community-driven development! In addition to the benefits listed in the press release below and attached, we have ensured: - wall-to-wall green jobs; - at least 51% Bronx procurement, which will serve as a long-term economic engine for our local contractor and supply base; - scholarships for Bronx residents to study renewable energy and green building design; - an after-school sports program for local youth; a guarantee of healthy food for sale and a ban on plastic bottles! Stay-tuned for our upcoming community celebration, and stay attentive so these promises become reality and don't fall the way of the Atlantic Yards or Yankee Stadium. With over 25 local signatories (including my worker-owned cooperative Concrete Green!) and thousands of supporters, we intend to use this CBA as a foundation for the next 99 years of positive community development in the Kingsbridge neighborhood and throughout the Bronx!

Sign this petition to show your support for the Kingsbridge Armory Redevelopment Alliance (KARA)’s community benefits principles.

We, the undersigned urge our political leaders to engage in a meaningful dialogue with the community to ensure that there is responsible development at the Kingsbridge Armory.

We need:

·         living wage jobs for local residents,

·         community space with affordable arts and recreation,

·          healthy, green building design and programs,

·         opportunities for our low-income entrepreneurs,

·          no big box retail that competes with our local businesses,

·         a new high quality school at our Kingsbridge Armory.

We are tired of development projects that end in broken promises and are urging Bronx politicians to work with their constituents to reach an enforceable agreement with the developer that we can count on!

This is important to me for many reasons: because I believe in the right to the living wage, because the Bronx deserves access to better educational systems and spaces, and because as a Fordham graduate, I have bore witness to the injustice that exists in the Bronx community. It is an obligation to advocate on the behalf of this vibrant and resilient community of people.
