Iowa Legislature: End Radon in Commercial Property Act

      Urbandale, IA

Radon, a toxic, colorless, odorless, radioactive gas, is the number 2 cause of lung cancer in the U.S. behind tobacco. It enters our homes, offices, hospitals, schools, nursing homes, grocery stores, and other facilities through cracks, holes, and any other openings. The whole state of Iowa is labled by the EPA as Zone 1, meaning Iowa citizens are at Highest Potential for exposure to elevated levels or radon. According to the American Lung Association: "The average indoor radon concentration in Iowa is 8.5 pCi/L. More than SIX TIMES the national average." Action needs to be taken!

I am a health care worker and prevention is key when it comes to many diseases and cancer from Radon exposure is preventable.

If smoking (something that unfortunately limits some people's freedom) is banned from public places, why shouldn't something that no one wants anywhere be removed too?

This is a very true issue brought up by Alma. Why limit Radon levels to residential areas only, the limit should be in place everywhere.

As a future health care professional, we advocate proposals that benefit our health and combat those that aren't good for our health. As ironic as it could be, I do not want to jeopardize my health while health other individuals' health.
