Indiana Legislature: Stop good time credit for violent offenders

My brother and sister in law, Matt and Lisa, were murdered by a convicted murderer who only served 20 years of a 45 year sentence.  This heinous act was perpetrated in front of their two children who are now orphans.  The convicted murderer was Matt's younger brother Steve.

Steve shot and bludgeoned an older man to death in 1989. The victim's family vigorously opposed parole because they felt he should do the full sentence and they feared that he would kill again.   He was let out on parole directly from prison without having to go to work release or a halfway house.  He only had to check in with his parole officer for 1 year.  He was out of jail just over two years before the victim family's fears came true and he murdered Matt and Lisa in cold blood with the assistance of his live-in girlfriend Jennifer.

The Winston family of South Bend, Indiana is also joining me in my fight against good time credit.  Trina Winston was murdered by her husband, Tarrence Lee in August of 2012 in their apartment.  Tarrence along with 2 friends took Trina's body and hid it in an attempt to evade being charged with murder.  Tarrence was sentenced to 150 years in prison for a double murder that occurred in 1986.  HE ONLY SERVED 20 YEARS OF HIS SENTENCE!!!

After being released, Tarrence Lee was involved in a traffic accident that took the life of an Indianapolis man.  He was suspected of DUI, but since he was driving on a CDL, he declined to have a Breathalyzer test done, which resulted in him only being punished with the loss of his CDL for one year.  There was no punishment meted out for the loss of life in the accident.

Trina Winston's body was found in late October 2012 buried under debris and used tires outside of Chicago, Illinois.  Tarrence Lee has now been charged with the murder of Trina Winston.

Did you know that for every day a violent offender serves in jail without behaviour incidents, the offender will get one day off of their sentence?  Even if the inmates do not behave, the credit is still awarded in many cases!   Did you also know that if an offender gets a college degree while in prison they receive 4 years off of their sentence?

We, as a community, need to take a stand.  We need to make sure violent offenders do every bit of the sentence they were given for their crimes.  It is no wonder that crime is rampant because the criminals know that they will never have to serve their full sentance, so they have no fear of the criminal justice system.

Please join with my family and the Winston family as we fight to make sure this horrible crime does not happen to anyone else.  Please let your voice be heard.

Because I don't want myself or anyone else murdered by someone.- especially when society already has identified the perp as a murderer.

My cousin was murdered in 1989 and our family is fighting to keep the murderer behind bars where he belongs. they do the crime, they should have no parole, do the time they get. no early release.

Because it is an outrage that violent felons are being released after doing less than half of the time they were sentenced to.

This world is only going to get worse. It seems the system protects the bad guys instead of the victims.. Very sad what this world has come to.

I don't believe that violent offenders should be allowed out. In one case specified, why would someone sentenced to 150 years in prison be allowed out after only 20 years served. This has never made sense to me. If they are sentenced to a specified amount of time, they should serve it all as with Federal law!
