House Leaders: Establish knowledge standards for members of the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology

Representative Paul Broun of Georgia recently declared that evolution, embryology, and the Big Bang are “lies straight from the pit of Hell.” He believes the Earth is 9,000 years old and was created in six days. Representative Broun is a member of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.

This is a disgrace. The House Science Committee makes crucial decisions regarding national priorities for scientific research. If the United States is to remain a world leader in science and technology, these decisions should not be made by people who do not understand basic principles of science or whose personal beliefs lead them to reject empirical evidence.

This seemed too crazy to be true until I watched the video of him saying it.

Theology has no place on a science committee. The blind faith preachers need to be replaced with rational thinkers, knowledgeable in at least one branch of science, and capable of understanding others.

I am a scientist, and when non-scientists deliberately deny or misrepresent scientific data (e.g., climatology, evolutionary biology, etc.) they put the future of the U.S. in jeopardy. If the U.S. does not continue to fund cutting-edge science, then our country will not be able to compete economically with other nations.

It is important to me because scientific issues and fund allocation are some of the most important things to handle properly in today's modern world, and these things should be handled by experts. Representatives who believe an elementary school vinegar-and-baking-soda project erupts due to "God's Will" have no right and no reason to belong on this committee.

Science is a tool for understanding reality. If someone rejects science then they reject reality and should not be in a position of power.
