Victory

Hand4Paws would like to inform all the 12,644 supporters that gave a voice to Phoenix that today we celebrate a victory for animals! The maximum penalty has been given to one of the two teens that attacked him. Each person that made up the prosecution team defending Phoenix are heroes and deserve all our love and respect for the victory attained today. The judge sentenced Adell Zeigler to two years in prison plus banning him of owning an animal for 7 years. He will start serving this sentence in the month of October of 2013. Right now he is still in jail because of other charges. It may not be enough time or punishment that he received compared to the torment that Phoenix lived through. The Judge gave maximum sentence and it is a step in recognizing that animal cruelty and abuse will be punished. Thank you to the staff of Buffalo Small Animal Hospital for saving Phoenix’s life. This is your victory! This is a victory achieved by Phoenix. Thank you to the guardian angel and now human companion of Phoenix

19-year-old Adell Zeigler and 17-year-old Diondre Brown, of Buffalo New York, were in court Wednesday, November 14, 2012 and are charged with felony-aggravated cruelty to animals. Zeigler and Brown burned an innocent 16-week old puppy named “Phoenix”.

A horrified woman had called the police after seeing something burning and realized it was a puppy. The suffering puppy, now named Phoenix, was found on Herman Street and was still burning.

Zeigler and Brown admitted to holding the helpless, frightened puppy three feet in the air, dousing him with lighter fluid and setting him on fire.

Phoenix, who staff at Buffalo Small Animal Hospital call a “trooper”, has recently “underwent his first of many surgeries to help repair the damage from extensive burns over his entire body. Veterinarians say 60% of his ears have been amputated and several more skin grafts are necessary. It's also still unclear if they will have to amputate one of his hind legs”. Dr. Rebecca Wagner, states, "He improves daily. He's doing quite well and he's taken everything in good strides."

The police were unable to locate the abusers until a break came in from a tip that lead to the arrest of Zeigler and Brown. Both men could face up to one-and-one-third to four years in prison.

Phoenix is in Albany today to celebrate NYS Animal Advocacy Day! Dr Josh Brugzul will be speaking about his treatment and recovery and he’ll be making a guest appearance to show off how great he looks! We would like to take this opportunity to announce that Phoenix has found a forever home with Judi, his foster mom! She has provided around the clock care from him for over 7 months now, he’s bonded, settled, and very attached to Judi and his best friend Ruckus. We truly feel it is in his best interest to let him stay in the home that he knows with the person that he loves. Phoenix will become a therapy dog and continue his work as an ambassador for the Shelter, an advocate against animal abuse, and a symbol of resiliency. We would like to thank the local, national and international communities for all of the generos

It's disgusting the mentality of these people, and severe punishment is needed to further deter people of similar mind-set from committing similar atrocities.

As the owner of two young cats I'm horrified to find that anyone could do something as incomprehensible as this to a vulnerable animal; who has probably just left his mother. We have a duty of care over these infantile creatures (and creatures of all ages, for that matter) and there is simply no room for such cruelty in modern society. Surely these youths should be punished as if this animal were a human being? I think it's appalling that the maximum prison sentence that will be issued is 4 years (and realistically what is the likelihood of the sentence being that long?). If these thugs had attempted to murder a human being they'd be put away for a lot longer. The only thing that made this crime an inchoate crime was the fact that someone intervened. It is quite clear that these people intended to kill the animal (in one of the most painful ways imaginable) therefore I feel it would be fitting to give them a life sentence.
