Backyard hens bring joy to their owners, eat insects, produce healthy eggs, and provide excellent garden compost. When kept properly, like any other pet, they are clean and safe.

Current Ordiances only permit chickens on properties of 5 acres or larger, however hens kept as pets only require a few square foot of space to be healthy and happy.

Having grown up in Mantua Twsp, We had many free range hens and roosters running around from our neighbors yards. I have known the benefits of having chickens all my life. They "sprayed" for mosquitoes but we never had "tick" issues with our many dogs. They were our friends to play with, we had our favorites. They were never a problem and they were sheer excitement for all of us when a new family of hatch-lings were born. I remember my mom sending us kids out to try to find their eggs and we had the best time scouting about and very proud when we could bring a few back to mom. Our reward ? A fresh egg sandwich. Who dosen't love the sound of a rooster's crow? That was the first animal sound that I tried to vocally recreate growing up. People visit the Florida keys by the millions every year to enjoy one of the islands many joys...their chickens. They "protect" their chickens.

I currently live on 4.82 acres and have been raising 3 hens since April with amazing results. We have been even able to let them free range for the last 4 months with no issues whatsoever from our neighbors. They provide me with 21 eggs per week and provide us with much joy. The eggs we get from these girls are AMAZING!
