Help My Autistic Son Get a Life-Saving Heart Transplant

      Pottsville, PA

My son Paul was denied placement on the heart transplant list because of his mental disability. The doctor was more interested in the fact that he could not name all his medications (he takes 19 at the present time) and the Princess Peach doll he carries for comfort (he now carries a Princess Daisy as well), than the fact that he has never smoked or drank alcohol. Where will the discrimination end?

They never performed any tests to evaluate Paul's heart condition or mental status. He was denied placement on the list based solely on records from his cardiologist. How can they turn him down without performing a full evaluation?

Paul is a wonderful man that has taken his physical illness in stride. He has written three self-published novels geared toward preteens. He is now working on the fourth. This is really the only thing that keeps his mind off of his mortality. How do I explain to him why he can't have a new heart?

Can you help us tell the Transplant Committee they are wrong and he deserves the chance to grow old and watch his two young nephews grow up.

      To All:
Thank you for your continued support for Paul. He has been getting some unfavorable email concerning the other petitions he has started on his own. If you do not agree with him, please just don't sign the petitions. DO NOT send him an email or make an inappropriate comment. You are just making him feel worse about himself than he already does.
Thank you again for your support.

It is obvious to us now that this petition has not helped us thus far. I took notice that the only time change.org is willing to help is when your petition is getting national media attention. That is very sad. I am so tired of the excuses why my son is being denied but we will keep on fighting. 2013 is a new year and we plan on consulting with a few more hospitals. I just hope my beautiful son does not continue to question his self-worth. How many times can he be told no before he chooses to give up.

    9. We will never give up.

Even if the Mayo Clinic tells us no for the same reason, we will never give up. Paul's life is worth saving and he means the world to so many people. We will keep on fighting for him and the rights of all people with disabilities!

I have written several times to Congressman Tim Holden and have not gotten so much as a form letter. If you find this unacceptable, do not vote for him. I only wrote to Senator David Argall once and he immediately responded. He has my vote.
