Help bring down racist anti-abortion billboard

    1. Petition by

      Amelia L

      Austin, TX

In February 2010, 65 billboards went up across Atlanta proclaiming “Black Children are an Endangered Species.”  A legislative campaign followed, proposing bans on race- and sex-selective abortion as a protection against abortion providers’ implied racism.

Though these bills were defeated in Georgia, the fight is far from over.  Media campaigns like the “endangered species” original have been already been launched across the nation, including in my hometown of Austin, TX.  One billboard on 9th Street and I-35 South features a male African-American child and proclaims “The most dangerous place for some children is in the womb.”

This billboard is racially offensive and insulting to women.  It likens abortion to genocide and paints African-American women as either the stupid pawns of doctors, or willing participants in a "genocide" conspiracy.  Furthermore, this advertising campaign disrespectfully manipulates African-American people's history, historically-rooted concern about medical mistreatment, genocide and slavery.

A similar billboard went up in New York City and was immediately challenged by the people there.  Why can’t we do the same?

I invite anyone who is involved in or supports pro-choice, progressive and reproductive justice movements to leave a voicemail with Dinosaur Outdoor Advertising, the Austin company which owns the billboard, asking them to take it down.  You can reach them at 512-272-8887.  UPDATE as of March 22, 2010:  This billboard has been taken down!  However, there is another one on Hwy 71 in Austin featuring a young Latina girl with the same messaging.

You may also call (512-340-0999), email (hminfo@heroicmedia.org), or fax (512-340-0888) Brian Follett of Heroic Media, the company responsible for the offensive campaign.

**VOICEMAIL SCRIPT**

Hello, my name is _______ and I’m calling to petition you to take down the Heroic Media billboard.  Please log my complaint in your company's records.

Your company’s webpage says that you take pride in Austin’s progressive culture and diversity.  I’m calling to ask that you hold true to your company’s vision and reject racist, anti-woman advertising.

Please take down Heroic Media’s billboard at 9th and I-35.  Thank you for listening.
