train the doctors Australia needs

    1. Petition by

      AMSA Internships

Despite a shortage of doctors in many rural Australian communities, this year it is predicted that nearly 500 medical graduates from Australian medical schools will be unable to obtain an internship in Australia and therefore be unable to work as doctors in underserved Australian communities.

We urge you to commit to train the workforce needed to address the rural workforce shortage and provide for Australia’s population health needs by ensuring that, this year, there is an internship available for every medical graduate in Australia. Without ensuring this, these medical graduates will be unable to serve the community as doctors and forced to move overseas or work outside of medicine. This would represent a wasted investment in training future doctors and lost opportunity to address the needs of communities who have inadequate access to medical services.

If the schools are happy to receive your money (international or local fees), there should be a plan for life after uni as well.

The government has a responsibility to provide training positions for all medical students. They increased the number of places at university to address a need, but they must follow through with further training positions otherwise this was absolutely pointless.

Internship is the most crucial step in medical training. Without it the hard efforts and sacrifices at medical school are purposeless. It should be a guaranteed rite of passage for every medical graduate in Australia!

my child is an international medical student who is very keen to practise in Australia. Not being to secure an internship would be a great disappointment .Never thought such a situation could arise in Auistralia when there is a shortage of doctors. Certainly hope this situation will be addressed and steps taken to increase the number of place sfor internships. Returning home is not an option given the oversupply of medical graduates.

As a parent of an international student graduating in 2012, I sincerely hope that the internship crisis can be solved quickly so that all of this year's graduating students can fulfill their residency requirements in Australia.
