Approve the use of nurse practioners in the Yukon

      Whitehorse, Canada

The Yukon is the only jurisdiction in Canada that is not utilizing nurse practioners. Given the increasing shortage of physicians in the Yukon, many residents are left without access to health care. NP's are needed to bridge the ever increasing gap as the need for heath care becomes an issue in the Yukon. Many Yukoners are finding themselves without and family doctor, or in the process of loosing thier current doctors. The only opption for these people is to seek care from the emergency department, over taxing an already heavily over burdened department. We must urge our minister of health to help adress the Yukon's health care deficiencies by utilizing nurse practionioners as the rest of Canada has already done.

My government has always been in favour of enacting NP regulations and has worked with doctors and nurses in the territory in an effort to bring forward the best possible legislation. Thank you for your interest in this issue and I hope that this response has addressed your concerns.

When I was appointed Minister of Health, one of my top priorities was to finalize the regulations enabling Nurse Practitioners to work in the territory. Since I was appointed, I brought the Yukon Registered Nurses Association and the Yukon Medical Association together to discuss NP regulations and have refined the regulations to the point where they are almost ready.

The Department of Health and Social Services met with the YRNA on August 22nd and provided revised wording on a couple of issues to them on August 28th. We are now waiting for the YRNA’s response to the revisions. Once that response is received, I will be in a position to take the final regulations to Cabinet for approval.

this will improve the quality of care for yukoners by providing adequate numbers of practitioners within the community. This will also reduce the stress on our hospital system by targeting those who use the hospital as a clinic.

Nurse practitioners are such a valuable resource, and we already have them. Why not make the best use of them?

We are Seniors and depend on the Nurses in our community- the doctors only visit monthly. I am confident that the Nurse practitioners can manage most of our health issues and are here to provide full time resources and support every day to all citizens in our community.

Provide consistency as doctors only visit one day in most communities. Nurses are very capable of practising in a braoader scope.
