Halt livestock overgrazing on the Black Hills National Forest.

      Rapid City, Saint Barthélemy

The Black Hills Group of the Sierra Club has determined in a two-year study of livestock grazing on the Northern Hills Ranger District, Black Hills National Forest that overgrazing is widespread. This is a violation of the Forest Service's contract with the people of the Black Hills and, indeed, the nation as represented in the Land Management Plan for the Black Hills National Forest. Despite attempts to settle this issue locally, Forest Service land managers have refused to credit the information presented to them despite the fact that the data were collected by a professional range scientist. Overgrazing is negatively affecting hunting, fishing, recreation, water quality, and population viability for locally rare species like the American dipper.

"4-inch stubble" rule for riparian zones on federal land in the West is destroying streambank vegetation and water-retention capacities, causing water losses and droughts.

We need to care for our world and over-grazing destroys it. I love the beautiful Black Hills and wish to keep it beautiful!

I want the Black Hills kept as green & healthy as possible for both aesthetic & health/safety reasons. This year especially has been so dry that everything is already prematurely overly brown & dried out with resulting fire danger & red alerts. The last thing we need right now, especially, is overgrazing with resulting erosion & contamination of water--poor for both man & all animals. Wouldn't think this dried up stubby grass/straw/hay or whatever, would be very healthy for livestock anyway? Because I love real, natural beauty, & health for people, animals, & all our environment, I am pleased to sign this petition.

I live in the Hills and would like to see grazing eliminated in our forests. Let the prairie return to it's healthy state for all to enjoy.

      Overgrazing is not good management.
