Hackney Council Licensing Committee: Reject the application of a BETTING SHOP at 2-4 Clarence Road, E5 8HB

A previous betting shop on this site closed and since that time there has been a marked decrease in anti social behaviour and a notable improvement in street life. This was a point where the riots last year concentrated, it is important that the community see a beneficial and positive addition to the neighbourhood rather than something which contributes to dis-order and local nuisance.

I feel strongly about this issue and would be prepared to take some kind of direct action, either turning up at the Town Hall/Planning Offices or demonstrating outside the premises. I am now a grandmother and I have seen how the betting shop culture attracts heavy drinking, and guys who loiter around spitting. What do the police think - I should think this goes against all the work they have done on the Pembury Estate.

There are plenty of places to hang out on Clarence Road, people gathering around them makes me feel rather uncomfortable walking home/past them in the evening. A betting shop is the last thing we need.

Given that there is already a branch of Paddy Power at the other end of the Narrow Way, we see no need for another branch just two minutes' walk away. Yet another betting shop would have a detrimental impact on commercial variety in the area, not to mention the detrimental impact on the community it pretends to serve.
