According to Sharese Shield Ages, an education attorney not related to this case,  "The school district should do a very good job communicating to both parents and students what appropriate contact is between students and teachers and to the extent that they have not done that it was an extreme punishment for the student."

This is an extreme punishment that potentially derails college plans for this young man. The punishment does NOT fit the violation.

This appears to be an overreaction on the part of school officials. The punishment is unduly harsh and excessive and is yet another example of white school administrators inability to young black male students fairly AND/OR connect with them in order to address and behavior problems they may have. We should be reminded that Trayvon Martin was suspended for 10 days leading up to the tragic encounter with George Zimmerman. There is no telling what may happen to this young man doing a whole year out of

school. But the school board seems more concerned with sending a message then they are with his future.

Because when I was a kid, some of my teachers were very nurturing and supportive to me.An innocuous hug is just that, showing appreciation,we're only human...

Because I dont believe he should be suspended the school should have called his mom first.

Look, maybe the hug was the wrong type, or the camera angle made it look more than it needed to be. Or even, the hug was a bit off, but to expel a student from school for the year? Come on, even you have to agree that that is a bit extreme.

Because this punishment doesn't fit the "crime."
