Many electricity providers, i.e. Con Edison are allowing residential homes to buy green energy, i.e. wind and water.
In NY, buying GREEN POWER (65% water, 35% wind) is only about $10 more per month, plus NY sales tax are partially removed, and you get a one-time $25 rebate.

Kit Carson Electric Coop offers Green Electricity for only 40 cents per month. This does not mean all of our electricity is Green but that all of our money goes to developing more Green electricity so that eventually it WILL all be Green. It used to be something like $1.50 but so many people were subscribing to the program that it was lowered to 40 cents, making it affordable for everyone who can afford electricity.

In Cleveland, they are looking at ways to use Lake Erie and the wind for alternative forms of energy...it would definitely be cheaper to use things that are readily available year-round!

It is a dangerous misunderstanding if you think that buying green power is the same thing as receiving it.  I signed up for all of my energy to be produced by wind.  I pay for it as if it is.  I know that it is not.  Yes this is good to do.  But big momma nature doesn't care about good intentions.  It's going to take a whole lot of us to persuade the big energy companies that this shift is really going to be profitable.  In conjunction with this decision, in the meantime, if you really want to have any effect at all you have to commit to using less energy as well.

I did this about a year ago. Barely noticed it in my monthly bill.

Although I think my Con Edison (now National Grid, I think -- I'm sad to lose the Edisonian reference with all its historical resonance!) electricity bill has gone up a bit more than just $10 a month, I am still thrilled to be able to do something this direct to expand clean energy.
