Governor Phil Bryant and Mississippi State Legislators: Don't Allow Tar Sands Development in Mississippi.

Governor Phil Bryant and Mississippi State Legislators: Don't Allow Tar Sands Development in Mississippi.

    1. Petition by

      Mississippi Sierra Club

Tar sands is a mixture of clay, sand and a form of oil called bitumen, which is similar to asphalt or tar. It is costly and energy intensive to extract and the waste generated by this kind of mining is toxic.

A geological formation called the Hartselle Sandstone formation in Northeast Mississippi has been targeted for tar sands development by Governor Phil Bryant. A similar tar sands mining project in Canada has been described as one of the most destructive mining projects in the world.

Tar sands development in Mississippi will negatively affect the health and safety of the people of the state, their communities, and our beautiful and natural Mississippi environment.

Join us in telling Governor Bryant that we don't want this project in Mississippi.

To:
Don't allow tar sands development in Mississippi.

Sincerely,

Developers of Tar Sands are improving their technology but require strict oversight, which currently isn't available. Now is not the time for the state to allow Tar Sands development.

Allowing Tar Sands Development would amount to a short-sighted, reckless energy policy for our state and nation.
