Suspend the use of neonicotinoid pesticides in New Jersey

Neonicotinoids, which belong to a systemic class of neuro active chemicals related to nicotine, have been proven to be highly toxic to honeybees. Honeybees are NJ's honorary state insect. They perform the important task of pollinating our food crops. Honeybees are dying and we need to act now. New Jersey beekeepers are struggling to stay in business. If pollination fails, who will pollinate our food?

The buzz about pesticides - by Nature Video

Bees, the most important pollinators of our crops, are in trouble. All over the world, their populations are decreasing and scientists want to know why. In this video, Nigel Raine and Richard Gill introduce us to the bumblebees they study at Royal Holloway near London.

Yesterday we rallied in Palmer Square Princeton NJ where members of the Princeton Bee Team joined us to help collect signatures and spread the word about our honeybees and their failing health due to neonicotinoid pesticides. We even had a mascot, Bufo the bee dog, who willingly donned a bee costume to help with our cause!

    9. SUSPEND

We have decided to go from ban to suspend because of the urgency of our request. Suspending neonicotinoids would be faster than an outright ban , less review process, less legal steps, more immediate action and faster results. Honeybees and beekeepers can no longer sustain losses at the rate we have been and recent regulatory activity in the beekeeping community has confirmed our worst fears: it ain't gettin' any better. We cannot afford to "wait and see" if a ban is possible, a suspension would be a more immediate and direct approach to getting neonicotinoids ultimately banned.
