Governor Brown: Restore Early Start Funding!

    1. Petition by

      Association of Regional Center Agencies

Governor Brown is the final control on whether Early Start is restored... even if the Legislature approves the restoration, he could veto it, forcing thousands of children to remain without these vital services!

Early skills are critical so that individuals can lead productive self satisfying lives. Later it is often too late.

Studies have shown that early intervention services reduce costs of services in the long term, among other benefits. As a Speech-Language Pathologist working in both Early Start and within the school districts, I have seen first hand the benefits that these services have provided to families. Please restore this funding!

I have worked in this field for 45 years and understand how important Early Start has been in mitigating the impact of developmental disabilities and at risk conditions. The cost effectiveness of this early intervention is the kind of service the governor understands and should support.

Restoring early start funding is an investment as it will reduce education costs later in a child's life. The rate of return on this invesment is that for every dollar spent on early intervention now means that at least $7 will be saved on services later in the child's life. There are many other reasons to restore this funding but financially it is extremely foolish not to do so because of the proven cost/benefit to the State of California.
