Gov. Richard Scott

Stop Rick Scott's plan to hurt liberal arts and social science programs.

    1. Petition by

      Maria Garcia

      Jacksonville Beach, FL

Rick Scott wants more young people to get college educations. However, he wants more students to get degrees in fields he thinks will get them jobs, such as science, technology, and mathematics. By shifting more funding away from liberal arts and social sciences and more towards what he considers to be the more important subjects, he will cripple programs such as psychology and anthropology. What Rick Scott does not seem to understand is that liberal arts subjects are actually very valuable to students in the long run, and that many successful and historically important people have majored in them. As citizens of this nation, we have a right to a quality education in whatever field we choose. Tell Rick Scott that he CAN NOT and WILL NOT decide for us what we will spend our lives learning and doing.

In just three days, we've made it over half way to our goal of one hundred signatures!!! I would like to thank everyone who has stood up for students and educators in this state. Please help get the word out and gain more support for this cause by sharing this petition on facebook, twitter, and e-mail. Does Rick Scott really want to create a society devoid of writers, poets, psychologists, and social activists?

Cutting these programs means eliminating future teachers in these areas- although why would that even bother Rick Scott since he hates teachers anyway right?

I'm a Latin teacher and already fear for foreign language education- and cutting these programs makes my future look even bleaker because of its interdisciplinary nature. What is a lnguage without anthropology, history, or comparative psychology?

I feel Rick Scott wants to eliminate liberal arts and just form technical workers who cannot form critical opinions, he wants to create jobs but he doesn't care about what type of jobs, if it means more people getting low paying jobs he'll be satisfied, and that is not what Florida needs, it needs a system where everyone can maintain a good quality of life, he's a millionaire and all he cares about is maintaining himself in power and his friends, people who are rich cannot be politicians because they have no idea what it is to be a normal everyday american, so how can they decide our laws.

I am a career archaeologist with over 15 years of professional experience (e.g., Oregon Asst. State Archaeologist); my career would not have been possible without my Master of Arts from Univ. of Florida and Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from FSU.
