February 2014

Thank you to everyone who supported my petition on to veto SB 1062. Your signatures and diligent efforts to educate your communities had a direct impact on this decision. I encourage all of you to continue to pay attention to the bills being passed by our Congress and speak up if you disagree. You can make a difference.

Governor Brewer said she want to make Arizona the best state, a place where businesses thrive, families can build a life together, and every individual enjoys the freedom that makes our country great. On her desk sits a bill that would threaten Arizona's economy, hurt our families, and erode our fundamental rights. We call on Gov. Brewers leadership to show the rest of the country and world Arizona is open for business to all people and remains a place where, no matter your politics, beliefs, gender, race, or sexual orientation, it is a place you can call home. We ask Gov. Brewer to pick up your pen and veto SB 1062, a bill that would legalize discrimination and take us back, not forward to the prosperous future we all want for our great state.

I never imagined this would be a petition I would have to start, especially in the year 2014 when so much progress has been made. Arizona has a woman governor, allowed to follow her dreams of public service. Nobody was able to determine her path because they have a religious belief on the role of women. Her story and countless others are in jeopardy. I knew we had to act and started this petition as a way to bring the voices against this bill together.

If Governor Brewer vetoes the bill we can quickly put this behind us. Families and friends can continue to go into businesses without worrying of being turned away. Tourists can countinue to visit our great state without fear of discrimination.  We can bring more companies like Google to Arizona to provide jobs.

And if the bill is signed, Arizona's future will be bleak. Imagine having to think if you or a family member will offend the religious beliefs of the server or owner of a restaurant you love, having to research every business to be sure you will welcomed. Think of state where you may come into work one day and be fired because you're a single parent or divorced. How many businesses will be forced to leave or never come in the first place because Arizona has become the focus of a nationwide boycott. This will be Arizona if SB 1062 becomes law.

Arizona should be place where we embrace our differences and show respect to all people, even those with whom may not agree. We cannot become a state that allows people to use their beliefs as an excuse to take away the rights of others, making a story like our own Governor's not possible. Please join us in asking Governor Brewer to veto SB 1062. Sign the petition and share as widely as possible. Thank you for your support.

Remember when people of color used to be denied service and access to the things that white people had? We look back on that now and it seems absolutely absurd. This is the same thing all over again. Haven't we learned from our mistakes?
