Install cameras and 24 hour police surveillance

A friend of mine was cowardly attacked at Newark Penn Station after The New Jersey Devils Playoff game. On her commute back home she was approached by a female asking for directions, seconds later her and a friend were attacked and beaten. This is a very dangerous situation, one in which NJ transit should pay for. It was after 10pm on a Saturday evening after a major sporting event, I think even in this case security and transit police should have been on heavy duty. The beaten woman was told that there were no cameras on the track area and that is very concerning, I have contacted Cory Booker via twitter and he responded that the City of Newark does not have any jurisdiction over NJ Transit. So I am starting this petition to make riding the train via NJ transit safer, not just safer for women, but for people in general. This could have been your child, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, or niece. Let's do the right thing by signing this petition, passing it along and creating the change that we want in this state and country!

We hold up our end of the deal by paying the fees regardless of how high they continue to rise, we simply are looking for Transit to hold their end of the deal in supplying a safe, reliable, and convenient method of transportation.

I have put off media coverage for a week to give the state and NJ Transit an opportunity to fix the situation. We have been contacted by a number of media outlets and are looking for action. This could be a major blemish on the strong record of Gov. Christie and I do not believe this reflects his high standard of service that he has provided over the years.

Thank you for the rapid response, I have over 1300 and counting signatures from NJ residents on an active petition that would like to see Gov Christie respond to this act of violence and the lack of security on the part of the NJ Transit.

      Mrs Genovese,

Unfortunately there are a number of issues with this situation, there are several cameras that are in place but are not functioning. After 10pm there should be at least 4-5 patrol officers on duty. Cameras will be insignificant without those additional officers!

The detective for NJ Transit in fact proved our point by having the young lady sit in the office and watch the monitors while he walked passed one of the cameras. He called the office and asked if they could see him and unfortunately they could not! This is just unacceptable, and we are challenging to the State of NJ as well as the mission statement of the NJ Transit in protecting commuters!

" Its mission is to provide safe, reliable, convenient and cost-effective transit service with a skilled team of employees, dedicated to our customers' needs and committed to excellence."

      Mr. Lee,

Thank you for your email dated June 11, 2012 regarding the unfortunate incident at Newark Penn Station earlier this month. Please be sure we are taking this incident and the request for more cameras/enforcement seriously.

First, we did our due diligence to understand what Transit already has in place enforcement-wise. We learned that there are surveillance cameras on Platform 1 and at the PATH turnstiles. However, you are correct that camera coverage is limited in the area where the fight took place.

Transit is currently undergoing a review of the camera status for all the platforms. Upon completion, a decision will be made about adding additional camera coverage. The Governor’s Office remains in communication with Transit on this issue and will let you know when the preliminary investigation is complete.

.thank you so much for everyone for their continued support. Great news from the eye doctor, my vision is still 20/20. But... discovered that TWO security cameras that would've directly filmed the attack and the stairs that the girls fled on DON'T EVEN WORK!!! And the other ones that do, showed no police by where we were attacked. Needless to say we are pissed. Detectives are working on trying to pull more footage. If you haven't already signed the petition that has been circulating on here, please sign so we can get more WORKING cameras and more police presence so that this won't happen to someone else. Thanks again for all of your love & support ♥

We have become so comfortable and content with the way we live our lives!!! When things happen we have to speak up and speak out, our kids are getting below average education, there is talk of obesity and all of the funds are being cut and school lunches just got rid of that pink slime!! If there is violence in your neighborhood, you can't go out and start beating people up and shooting but start a neighborhood watch program, and try to get the support of your local politician, if they don't care it is time to get them out of there!!!

We just hit 200 signatures, I am looking for 800 more pass it on!!

It is outrageous that there is no video surveillance in an area that is very easy for someone to commit robberies, rapes, murders and other crimes (such as this one) and be able to flee quickly and not have to worry about getting caught. They spend so much money on fixing trains and making the ride more "comfortable" for passengers, but they don't do anything to ensure the safety of their passengers? What sense does that make? I say no one should ride the train until nj transit does something about making it safer for people to ride the train.

I'm originally a New Yorker and was always fearful of riding the trains by myself because of all the crime. I knew where there were cameras and tried to be where they were just to feel safe. I hate that someone has to get hurt or killed before something is done, however now we know there's a problem it needs to be fixed!
