  • Petitioned Closing of June Mountain

This petition was delivered to:

Rusty Gregory Chairman and CEO of MMSA
Closing of June Mountain

Give it back to the town- Reopen June Mountain

    1. Karrah Spitznagel
    2. Petition by

      Karrah Spitznagel

      June Lake, CA

The closing of June Mountain eliminates a vital year round resource of income for several families in the near by area. This would cause a devastating domino effect to the June Lake community, followed by Mammoth Lakes, and the surrounding Mono County communities. When times are tough, a community should pull together to see it through, not turn it's back on loved ones.

The petition was able to be presented on July 10, 2012 to Rusty Gregory in June Lake, CA.

Since the petition was started on June 22 the day after the announcement, there has been 1438 signatures online and near 1600 (noted correction*) physical signatures to hand to Mr. Gregory that day. I started this petition out of fear of what will become of all the surrounding communities in a matter of a year without our key attraction and symbol, June Mountain. This petition is to spread awareness that this announcement has been made without any communication to June Mountain's own community June Lake, Mono County, and the Forest Service. As only one voice from the many of our next generation to inherit this land, I stand here today to say that I disapprove of a mountain that belongs to everyone being closed down without public consent.

Please help June Lake as well as all of Mono County get back our beloved June Mountain! Every person who signs and shares this petition is building support and awareness to help us Reopen June Mountain.

“Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountain is going home; that wildness is necessity; that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life.”

As you may or may not know June Mt. is not opening this season.  June is owned by Mammoth Mt. and is located about 20miles north of the town of Mammoth Lakes.   Mammoth Mountain executives have decided to close June due to their all important “Bottom Line”.  If you have ever been to June you know how special a place it is.  If you have never been then I feel sorry for you.  Here is a repost of a Pre-season web edit from June’s own website with June Lake local and Smokin Pro rider Jeff Kramer.  From everyone here at Smokin, rest in peace June Mt.

The petition has been reopened to keep the awareness and support building as the community takes the next steps towards reopening June Mountain for the 2012-13 winter season. Please keep signing and sharing to spread the word and stay updated with what is happening next.

Many are asking what are the next steps that the Forest Service will be taking?
A – We will be issuing MMSA a letter of non-compliance and working with them in their design of a process to develop a plan for sustainable operations at June Mtn. Ski Area. MMSA has stated that they are open and willing to talk about options. The Forest Service is open to listening to and working with any credible ideas that come forward regarding solutions to the closure of June Mtn. We are also consulting with other national forests who have dealt with Ski Area closures, as well as our legal counsel.

This mountain is on public land and every person has a right to it! Please help us fight the injustice of closing June Mountain.

      Petition Organizer

The petition is closed as of yesterday and the signatures that were collected before 7-10-12 @7:00 p.m. were presented to Mr. Gregory at the meeting in June Lake. Thank you very much for your support. My intentions now is to keep everyone who has signed the petition informed, present my recordings from the meeting and gather any help towards reopening June Mountain and aiding the community in any way to achieve this before the 2012-13 winter season. I will do my very best to keep the public involved and informed to spread awareness of this injustice that has happened and if there is any new decided actions to be taken. I hope this helps!

I would like everyone's opinion if you want to offer it message me please! Should I reopen the petition for the next two weeks while an important meeting process with MMSA and the community is underway. I am more than happy to present to Mr. Gregory more signatures if he is willing to agree to with me on July 30th. This may be a shot in the dark.
