Forrest Mars, Jr: Support Montana Agriculture, Not Coal Trains

    1. Petition by

      Coal Export Action

      Missoula, MT

The proposed Tongue River Railroad has one purpose: to export coal from Montana to markets in Asia, transforming the fertile Tongue River Valley into a mining industrial zone. Coal exports hurt farmers and ranchers near mining sites, and every community affected by the transportation, export, and burning of Powder River Basin coal. Not only that, carbon emissions from the coal industry will add to climate change around the world.

Forrest Mars, Jr., partial owner of Mars Inc, purchased a one-third share in the destructive Tongue River Railroad to divert the project from crossing his ranchland. But this won’t help hundreds of other communities still affected by dirty coal transportation. It also won’t prevent the Tongue River Valley being transformed into an industrial corridor for the coal industry.

Mars, Jr. has made billions from Mars Inc, and now he’s investing that money into a railway for coal exports. Coal Export Action, a grassroots network founded in Montana, is calling on Mars, Jr. to pull his investment in the Tongue River Railroad. We’re sending our concerns to Mars, Jr. care of Mars Inc, the company that gave him the money to put towards this project.

For every signature on this petition, an email will be sent to Mars Inc. This will put pressure on Forrest Mars, Jr. to withdraw his stake in the Tongue River Railroad and improve the image of his family company. Mars Inc is a private company owned almost wholly by the Mars family, giving Mars, Jr. a large amount of control over the company’s profits. The Mars legacy is being tarnished by dirty energy, and Forrest Mars has a chance to change this.

Join Coal Export Action in asking Forrest Mars, Jr. to do the right thing for communities from Montana to China: pull his investment in the Tongue River Railroad and stop the industrialization of the Powder River Basin!

Exporting coal to countries who do not use pollution control on their power plants causes serious damage to health and climate for all of us.

Coal burning leads to mercury in our air, soil, and water. It makes both the animals and plants in our diets unsafe; it makes us sick; it greatly compromises our children and their future. IT'S DISGUSTING and Forrest Mars Jr. should be ashamed of himself.

The character of Montana should not be sacrificed to increase the wealth of a few wealthy people who can never have enough material things.
