Ben's Cry for a Cure Answered Thanks to Brain Surgery

Rockland - In November we introduced you to a family in Rockland with four children who all have Tourette Syndrome. The oldest son was about to have brain surgery in hopes of changing his life. We followed up with the family this week, to check in on Ben's cry for a cure.

Hi All, I'm so excited because since i haven't been able to get a video uploaded on here for you to see how well Ben is doing, you will definately get to see the results of the surgery on Thursday Night May 16, 2013 on WABI-TV Channel 5 News at either 5 o'clock or 6 o'clock and it will also be their web site. I hope you all watch it and see what a difference DBS can make in the life of someone with Tourettes.

    3. TS in the family

My son Ben is doing very well. I learned at Ben's check up in February that the FDA does approve this for OCD. Isn't it ironic that they can approve it for something that is a side disorder, and at times just as severe as the TS, but not TS? My youngest son who is seventeen has such bad tics now that he is holding his breath, or talking non stop until he almost passes out. He is also up all night because his legs won't stop ticking. The Dr.s at NYU and I will discuss the possibility of DBS for him too. I know it sounds like I'm using it for a quick cure but believe me when you sit and watch your son, my youngest, punch his nose over and over without stopping until the corners split and he has blood everywhere and scabs that never heal because he can't stop the tic, I'd do anything to help them find the relief Ben has found.

      Much love and thanks,
      Mary

I just wanted to thank everyone who has signed this petition. Ben is doing so well. We leave for NYU tomorrow for his post op. Staples removed and frequency set. He has shown small tiny tics since the surgery but it's been almost four weeks and he has not ticked consistently. When I get back I will upload a video of Ben not ticking!! I am so pleased and grateful. Please keep passing this petition forward. We need a million signatures. Thank you again.

"Stimulation of either target improved tic severity by 70%, markedly ameliorated coprolalia, and eliminated self injuries. "

I suffer every waking moment from horrible, painful tics that have damaged my body and make me want to hide. DBS is a necessity for those with debilitating tics that can cause concussions, spinal cord damage, paralysis and broken teeth, but the worst of all is a shattered spirit.
