First Lady Michelle Obama: Please Do Not Appear on the Biggest Loser and Instead Engage with the Advocacy Communities Specializing in Weight Stigma

    1. Petition by

First Lady Michelle Obama is scheduled to be a featured guest on the show the Biggest Loser in November 2013.  She is presumably using the show as a vehicle to promote the Drink More Water campaign in an effort to fight childhood obesity.

While it is admirable to promote the enjoyment of movement amoung people of all ages, the Biggest Loser is a platform that is inappropriate for this message.  Due to the bullying, fat shaming, and mental, emotional and physical harm this show engages in, the appearance of the First Lady would be an implicit sanctioning of weight stigma and perpetuation of social injustice.

There is an enormous amount of support to be gained by allowing the vocal community of weight stigma advocates, eating disorders organizations, researchers and treatment professionals to help refine the Let's Move message in order to remove the dangerous, unintended aspects of the campaign and possibly promote the program.

Please help us to encourage the First Lady to utilize the compassionate and powerful community support of these professionals rather than the sensationalized, harmful platform of entertainment oriented shaming.

Michelle Obama, First Lady of the United States
Please Do Not Appear on the Biggest Loser Television Show

On behalf of myself and Chevese Turner of the Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA), I’d like to thank you all for your support and lighting fast response surrounding the First Lady and her appearance on the Biggest Loser. We found out during our meeting at the White House that, even with our speed and our voices, we were not successful in stopping her appearance. The show was filmed months ago and aired Tues, 11/12.

That said, we spent a good deal of time with the Director of the Let’s Move! campaign discussing the reasons why this community is so against the appearance and other options that would be more appropriate to further the Drink Up! and Let’s Move! messages in the future.

We got there too late for this season but you can bet that next season they will make a fully informed decision!

    6. We're Making Progress but We Still Need Your Help!

Please, help us spread the word that our First Lady is making an incredibly bad decision - one that will harm not only her Let's Move and Drink More Water campaigns, but one that does actual harm to the people she is trying to support. We need to make an impact and to do that WE NEED MORE SIGNATURES! Please, help us to spread the message that PARTICIPATING IN THE BIGGEST LOSER IS PROMOTING WEIGHT BASED BULLYING AND THAT'S NOT OK!

I do not believe that the biggest loser shows a healthy way to lose weight. I also believe the contestants are treated in a demeaning way.

As an eating disorder specialist, I have seen children as young as 8 starving themselves as a direct result of the First Lady's "War" on Obesity. Great idea, but in the schools, something has been terribly lost in translation. Little children driven to exercise, throwing up their food. Punishing exercise and diet competitions (really?) like this frightening reality what end? Please, Mrs. Obama, do not support this show that has only served to help created and support eating disorders.

We love the work you are doing to improve the health of our country, but this is not the way to do it! Please don't go on this show again! By doing so you are openly supporting weight discrimination and unhealthy weight loss!

As a recovered anorexic and binge eater, I strongly support all causes that seek to remove negative body image, fat-shaming and anti-obesity messages in the media and promote positive messages of healthy living for all individuals.

Please, please don't send this message to millions of people. If you appear on "The Biggest Loser" you endorse their insane, extreme measures, and contribute to the disappointment, shame, and humiliation of every overweight person.
