Feds Target Wolves with Aerial Gunning: Save the Lolo 75

    1. Sponsored by

      Defenders of Wildlife

Federal sharpshooters are preparing to take to the skies of Northern Idaho in an ill-conceived attempt to kill as many as 75 wolves to artificially boost game populations.

The claimed reason for the wolf-killing plan is that some believe that wolves are reducing elk numbers. But elk numbers began decreasing in the area long before wolves returned, as suitable elk habitat in the area declined due to natural changes.

The proposed plan is for Wildlife Services, a program under Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack’s supervision, to use helicopters and other aircraft to gun down wolves in the Lolo region near Clearwater National Forest -- our public lands!

Conservation groups have long sought to protect wolves from unscientific persecution, and we’re not about to give up on them now.

Help us stop the killing before it starts--send a letter to Secretary Vilsack today.

      This is unethical.

The reasons to kill wolves are irrational lies.

The killers want to wipe out the wolf population because they have a pure hatred for this animal. They don't care about science, biology, morals or anything else.

I had been watching, studying them quietly and discretely since early last fall. The way they cared for each other with the ease of two lifelong lovers was evident. Day after day, just as the sun was dipping below the western hills, this pair of wolves struck out together on their nightly quest for food... Returning around mid-morning each day to their well hidden den under the roots of the ancient, lightning-struck oak tree. From the looks of things, there would soon be a new litter of wolf cubs in this quiet valley.

Yesterday morning I waited for them as was my habit, sitting with my binoculars in the warming April sun near the top of a rise close to their den site. After a short time I spotted them off in the distance, playfully coming up the valley from the opposite direction. It must of been a successful hunt. They looked happy and carefree as they trotted and frolicked, unhurriedly towards their secret den.

I thought perhaps I'd been spotted when the two of them stopped dead in their tracks and cocked their ears. A few moments later, I too heard the sound that had brought fear to this pair of beautiful creatures and the sanctuary of their valley. Coming from the east, not much higher than the treetops was a small plane. It slowly crossed the valley then, purposefully circled back. Panic stricken, the two wolves took flight, heading for the closest trees on the south side of their remote valley.

They had almost reached the relative safety of the treeline when seemingly in slow motion, the female stumbled and rolled and I jumped as the sharp crack of rifle fire reached my ears. Without breaking stride the male of the pair circled back to his mate, now laying still and lifeless at the edge of the trees.... He nuzzled her once then he too crumpled to the ground as the sound of yet another rifle shot reach my ears.

Although this story is a work of fiction, it depicts the fate of wolves in many parts of Canada, the USA and probably many other parts of the world where ignorance and unfounded fear rule the minds of mankind. You can help bring an end to the aerial wolf hunt.
