Stop New Jersey from forcing sexual abuse victims to testify in court

    1. Petition by

This Bill does not protect our children or our communities. We already have laws that do that and keep the balance in our justice system. A3276 will FORCE children to have to testify in court because a mandatory 25 years eliminates any chance of a plea bargain. And it will cost the taxpayers almost $6.5 million a year every year, plus inflation costs. Could you do this to your child?

This is just a continuation of the original abuse and an absolutely absurd bill. I can not believe NJ lawmakers would actually do this.

As a victim of sexual abuse many years ago, I had a hard enough time explaining to doctors what happened, let alone a room full of strangers. It was terrifying enough, I couldn't imagine trying to testify in court.

There is a lot that I could say if asked, my experience goes back to my own childhood as well as the stories I've heard from others who dealt with sexual issues of molestation.

I believe that forcing a child to testify in court is dangerous to the mind of the child. There are so many reasons I say this but the most important issue is that the child's mind and emotions will traumatized. This would not make a mentally healthy child or future adult.

What happened to DNA evidence of rape as being the deciding factor on rape? It seems to me that a child's mind can be deceived or coerced into seeing a situation in a certain way, and then that child will not see issues surrounding the situation correctly or fear telling the truth which would likely damage a child for life. Isn't this the very reason that we are as adults supposed to PROTECT the minds of minor children?

If the situation is clear that it is rape, can YOU imagine telling a group of people in a court of law about what the rapist did to you? For an adult it would be a very difficult situation but for a child this would be unbelievably destructive!

No law requiring anyone to be on a public shaming list should be created. Life time sentences should NEVER be given to a "class" of people. We must think about ALL children when creating laws. Children of people on the registry are put in harms way and fear of vigilante crimes. These laws only create fear and hysteria in addition, convict innocent people for life (children of the registrants).

More cases will go to trial and force victims to testify. If the goal of this legislation is to keep the truly dangerous offenders off the streets, we already have civil commitment for the ones who can't be treated. They stay in prison after their sentences have expired. We don't need mandatory sentences which take the discretion away from one-size fits all approach.
