Dear Falmouth Residents, I am asking for your support for an issue that many of you may not be aware of. As it has been reported in the news recently, there are many public schools in this country in which the meal payment policy states that students with any outstanding balances are denied food or offered an insufficient option such as a "cold cheese sandwich". It was recently brought to my attention that our very own children and students of the Falmouth Public School system are subjected to these same procedures which are not only humiliating, but unhealthy. I cannot look the other way when it comes to feeding our children. These children are our future and our responsibilty. As tax paying citizens, it is not only the right choice, but the only choice to petition for a change in this policy. Thank you for supporting a change for our children. Tanya Peters, RN, BSN, CAPA

Falmouth Public Schools
Please change meal payment policy in Falmouth public schools. Our children deserve a healthy meal regardless of whether or not they forgot their lunch money. As tax payers, parents, and human beings, we refuse to let even one child be served a "cold cheese sandwich" as their only means of sustenance while at school.

Sincerely,
[Your name]

No child should be denied to eat a meal and suffer all day at school without food regardless of money!

Being denied food due to payment issues is comparable to child abuse I think when it applies to eating in a school cafeteria given the prominence our society places on education and the universal importance of humane treatment. Children can not be held accountable for such a thing because they're not as naturally independent as adults, parents can be irresponsible themselves sometimes and need I remind you that children don't make their own living? This is unimaginably absurd and can interfere incredibly with their lives in school. Get rid of this policy!

Can we please apply some common sense to our school policies, please? This policy is wrong for a number of reasons including but not limited to the impact to a child of singling him or her out over their parent's failure (intentional or not) to pay these relatively small bills. If a family can't afford food for their child to bring to school, then we should be dealing with it in a completely different way. If a parent is neglectful or forgetful, even on a continuous basis, again, why shame the child (or provide less/different food as punishment). What is the child and the other children learning from this? Step up and be thoughtful adults about this.
