Terminate food service contract with Chick-fil-A

    1. Petition by

      Becky Olive-Taylor

In order to accomplish the vision statement for Elon University’s mission, the community must act upon stated commitments. One of these is to “foster respect for human differences.” Moreover, the university’s long-range strategic plan calls for an unprecedented commitment to diversity and global engagement, supporting a world-class faculty and staff, and expectations of attaining the highest levels of achievement across our academic programs. Elon’s mission and strategic plan are best accomplished in an environment where our deliberate actions demonstrate that all community members are valued and respected. Maintaining the invited presence of Chick-fil-A on Elon’s campus calls into question our commitment to these shared values and goals. Therefore, we respectfully ask Elon to terminate the food service contract with Chick-fil-A.
While Chick-fil-A denies having an "agenda against anyone," an investigation by Equality Matters revealed that Chick-fil-A's charitable arm, WinShape, has a history of donating more than $5 million to anti-gay groups such as Focus On The Family, Exodus International, and the Family Research Council. When asked about this anti-gay agenda, Dan Cathy (Chief Operating Officer) responded - “guilty as charged.”
We acknowledge that individuals and corporations have the right to say what they choose and direct their resources where they choose. Those in the Elon community who enjoy Chick-fil-A will continue to have two franchises within two miles from campus. Elon as a private institution, however, has clearly articulated values in its mission statement and in other prized and highly publicized documents that stand in direct contradiction to the anti-LGBTQ values of Chick-fil-A. To recognize and honor these shared community values, we call for the removal of Chick-fil-A from Elon’s campus.
