My high school counselor, Mary-Anne Rios, one of the most influential and beloved women in my hometown of Lompoc, California, was diagnosed with lung cancer in August of 2010. She's never smoked a day in her life, and she recalls doctors refusing to do the proper scans because of that, which delayed her diagnosis. Her cancer has since metastasized in her brain and spine, and she's currently crossing items off her bucket list.
Aside from that, she's doing something remarkable. She's raising awareness about the side of lung cancer no one talks about--the side of the non-smokers. One of the items on her bucket list you can help me with, Ellen. It's one of her dreams to be on your show and spread this awareness. Lung cancer is the only cancer where victims are blamed, and it's the #1 killing cancer, but not everyone who has it has it for the reasons we assume. EVERYONE deserves the chance to live, and this only happens when awareness is raised.
Please, help me cross this item off her bucket list. Help me give something back to the woman who has changed our entire community.
