Pull dangerous current issue of Vogues Hommes International from newstands

    1. Petition by

      Sanctuary for Families

The cover photo depicts a woman getting choked by a male, which sends a dangerous message to anyone who sees this magazine – that choking is a sign of passion rather than of violence. Choking is a huge predictor of future lethality, as a recent study found that 43% of women who were killed by intimate partners had experienced at least one previous episode of choking before being killed.

I have been a victim of Domestic Violence in the past and it is not a good feeling or a good message to send out to the public. At no time should it appear to be right.

I teach at a domestic violence organization. The consequences of domestic violence are severe. It is our responsibility as a society to fight it and that includes saying "no" to anything that might promote it. The models in the picture, and the photographers for Conde Nast had that choice as well. Why didn't they refuse to shoot and pose for this type of picture?

"Flesh is not an irreducible human universal. Although the erotic relationship may seem to exist freely, on its own terms, among the distorted social relationships of a bourgeois society, it is, in fact, the most self-conscious of all human relationships, a direct confrontation of two beings whose actions in the bed are wholly determined by their acts when they are out of it. " - Angela Carter, The Sadeian Woman (1978)
