Back in 2010, the Israeli version of Dancing with the Stars featured a same-sex couple, and Portia de Rossi (actress and wife of Ellen DeGeneres) was invited to participate in the American version with a same-sex partner. Unfortunately, Portia declined and the producers have had cold feet ever since. American producers of DWTS recently suggested it would be unnecessarily controversial to have a same-sex couple, although professional dancers involved with the show have expressed openness to such pairings. Even the BBC has recently expressed openness to same-sex pairs on their popular celeb dance program. Surely ABC can move beyond "openness" and actually take this obvious next step!

If the show announces an openly gay competitor during the next cast reveal, they should allow that contestant the option of pairing with a same-sex partner. If they do not announce an openly gay cast member, they should plan to include a same-sex pair in the following season.
After featuring openly gay and transgender performers, this is a natural next step for the popular program. The Spring 2012 cast included openly gay tennis superstar Martina Navratilova -- but she was paired with a male dancer. Season 18 is under way now, and again offers no same sex pairs.
