Stop Raising our Rates for Dirty Coal

    1. Petition by

      Quit Coal

North Carolina has some of the dirtiest air in the country, where Duke Energy operates 7 dirty coal-fired power plants. Every year coal plants poison our water and cause thousands of asthma attacks, heart attacks and even deaths. To pay for these dirty, old facilities, Duke Energy raises our rates. As of February 2012, residents will be paying even more out of our already strapped pockets and lead to undue hardship on our families. Here in North Carolina, we are paying for the true cost of coal with our health, our environment and our energy bills.

Mass transfer to solar energy, while understand not the easiest transition in the world, is possible in its current state, and the transfer should start as soon as possible, especially given how long the transfer would take. Even WITHOUT solar energy, there is a myriad of cleaner sustainable forms of energy that NEEDS to , if not replace coal, at least share the brunt of the load for the sake of the economy, and the sake of everyone's health.

But hey, if you get poisoned, just drive over to you're nearest North Carolina hospital and make use of that free healthcare, right?...

Or for nuclear reactors that can't get built without federal guarantees!

Clean air and water should be a priority - not a nice perk that happens unless the cost to corporations are too high. It's time to replace coal with wind and solar.

Our kids are what they eat and drink. I don't want my children drinking poisoned water and breathing dirty air. Fix it. Close those plants DOWN.
