Start the high school day at a later time

      Arlington, TX

Research has overwhelmingly shown that teenagers, who require nine hours of sleep, have a different circadian rhythm that delays falling asleep and waking up.  Further research indicates early high school start times contribute to sleep deprivation.  High schools with later starting times show improved student grades, better attendance, lower dropout rates, fewer tardies, decreased disruptive behavior, and less depression. Starting Arlington high schools at 7:35 AM undermines optimal academic achievement.  The Arlington ISD must start the high school day at a time that provides every student the opportunity for academic success and personal well-being.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has taken a stand regarding adolescent sleep and school start times. As an advocate for later school start times in Arlington, I was elated with the news. The AAP policy statement, years in the making, identifies early daily school start times as the most critical contributor to the epidemic of sleep deprivation among adolescents.

    4. American Academy of Pediatrics Endorses Later Start Time

      Debbie Moore
      Petition Organizer

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued a policy statement today regarding adolescent sleep and school start times. In order to align school schedules with a teen's delayed biological sleep cycle, the AAP recommends that all middle and high schools begin the day no earlier than 8:30 AM!

Acknowledging the large body of adolescent sleep research, the academy identified school start times as the primary reason for the existing epidemic of teen sleep deprivation.

Hats off to the executive board of the national Start School Later organization, who has encouraged this policy statement for several years.

Please send Arlington ISD Superintendent Cavazos an email stating that it is time for the school district to set daily start times based on research and not bus schedules and parental convenience.

When I was in high school I had such terrible sleep habits I slept in class every day and was totally miserable. After high school I became very successful in academics; I wonder how much more I could have learned if I hadn't been tired and miserable all the time in high school.

I believe that if we can get one country (the whole country) to start school at a later time this could influence other countries and so in supporting this petition I'm looking to the future in hopes of getting a law like this in many other countries.
