Don't let sharks be fished to extinction

    1. Sponsored by

It's Shark Week and you know what that means: 24/7 coverage of some of the oceans' most alluring predators. But what you may not know is sharks are in danger from the world's most terrifying predators: humans.

Sharks are being fished faster than they can reproduce and their numbers are declining - and fast. Some U.S. hammerhead populations have dropped an alarming 98% in recent decades.

If we keep fishing at this rate, soon there will be no more sharks swimming in our waters and Shark Week will be our only chance to see these amazing creatures.

We want the U.S. government to limit fishing of the most threatened sharks. Speak up now to protect our sharks!

If we dont leave sharks alone there won't be any sharks left in the wild for our childern to see. We are killing all food chains off at an alarming rate. We need to stop this world wide not just in the United States!

Read Dr. Sylvia Earle's book "The World is Blue" and you will see how over the years humans are destroying the earth's oceans. But the clear message is that there is hope if we start now by enacting proper legislation to protect certain areas, limiting specific fishing styles (drag nets) which not only deplete species but destroy many others in the process including the floor of the ocean.

People need good information to make intelligent decisions. They need to seek it out to become informed about the world around us, in particular our oceans. Sharks have been on this planet before the dinosaurs. Let's make sure we are not the species that cause them to leave permanently.

I am from Australia, and it certainly doesn't help the sharks' cause down here that every time some moron is stupid enough to go into a shark's home (ie. the beach) and gets bitten, every redneck psycho in the country wants to cull every last shark in the ocean. Stop this stupidity before we lose them all, and our ocean ecosystems collapse.

I don't care if sharks are attacking people in record numbers. Their native home is the ocean, and obviously this is not people's native environment. They are the most important part of the ocean, being at the top of the food chain, controlling fish supply and regulating the natural order of the world.
