Say No to Hate Music! Don't give a platform to singers who call for the murder of LGBT people, and boycott their sponsors!
This summer, a number of venues in Europe will offer a stage to "artists" who call for the murder LGBT people. It is time to speak up again and to call for a boycott of these events and their sponsors.
The Berlin nightclub "Calabash Club", "Club Zurich" in Zurich, "Villa Paraiso" in Termoli, "Kolingsborg" in Stockholm and the Festival "Gusto Dopa al Sole" in Monteroni di Lecce have invited in August 2011 the singer Bounty Killer (Rodney Basil Price), who uses his songs to encourage murder of homosexuals:
"Bun a fire pon a kuh pon mister fagoty…." From the Song Another Level
"wipe out the faggot with a pure laser beam" From the Song Look Good
"Hear this likkle punk guh sing a battyman concept…To kill dis yah fool, to me dat is no stress Murder dem fast just like a Federal Express" From the Song Mr. Wannabee
The Jamaican gay activist group J-FLAG confirms that lyrics like these significantly worsen the already-negative attitude towards homosexuals on the island of Jamaica. Bounty Killer's albums are forbidden to be sold in Germany, and we applaud the German government for trying, albeit without success, to deny him entry to the country, but we must do more.
On August 26th, the Chiemsee Reggae Summer plans to host the singer Capleton, who calls for violence against homosexuals and their murder, singing about a "clean" world without gays and lesbians. (Chiemsee Reggae Summer has a history of ignoring civil rights. Last year, they tried to invite the singer Sizzla, but after a huge wave of protest against him and his hateful lyrics, his appearance was canceled because of "security issues". Now they are trying again.) In the US, Switzerland, and France, his concerts has been cancelled in the past, and this year, some of the artists who were due to appear at this festival have already cancelled their appearances because they refuse to share a stage with Capleton. We must build on this growing movement.
In Capleton’s songs and in comments from the stage, Capleton does more than call for a “metaphorical” cleansing by fire (“fyah bun”).
In “Bun Out Di Chi Chi” Capleton says: “Bun out ah chi chi, Blood out ah chi chi.” “Chi chi” is a derogatory Jamaican term for “gay man.” “Blood out: as in chop, cut, stab, shoot… is a particularly violent, graphic expression.”
In “Whoa! ‘New Way’” Capleton sings: “Sadomite and batty man shot-up….Whoa.” “Batty man” is another derogatory Jamaican term for “gay man.” It is clear here that he is calling for shooting gay men.
In “More Prophet” Capleton sings: ““All boogaman and sodemites fi get killed.” This translates as: All queers and sodomites should be killed.”
In “Hang Dem Up” Capleton sings that: “Bare batty man come round yah a brive….yow / String dem up and hang dem up alive.” This translates as: “All queers who come around here / String them up and hang them up alive.”
These songs are all on YouTube. And these are not all of Capleton’s homophobic songs. Capleton signed a Reggae Compassionate Act agreement, promising not to promote hatred and violence in 2007. But he violated his agreement before the end of the 2007.
We demand that Calabash Events, "Chiemsee Reggae Summer", "Villa Paraiso", Club Zürich and "Club Kolingsborg" immediately withdraw their support of people who call for hate, violence, and murder -- towards gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender people, and anyone at all!
Let the event sponsors -- Becks, Deutsche Bahn, the "Chiemsee Nachrichten" newspaper, Piranha-Media and the City of Übersee -- know what we think about their support for hate and violence. Tell them that we will not tolerate it, and we will launch a boycott.
