DO NOT REMOVE the Sculpture at the Overland Park Arboretum

    1. Petition by

      Nathan Glynn

      Kansas City, MO

The Overland Park City Council approved and installed a sculpture in the Overland Park Arboretum. The sculpture (called "Choice" by Yu Chang) is of a headless naked woman with her breasts exposed, taking a picture of herself. The message this piece sends to the children and young adults in our community has the potential to be informative and educational in this digital age. With all the problems we are having with sexting in our youth culture, this piece affords the opportunity for parents to have a conversation about the over sexualization of youth in popular culture in an environment that is pleasant and non-confrontational. Providing parents and children an opportunity to have an honest conversation is what helps impact youth choices.

The audience at the Overland Park Arboretum could not be more appropriate for this piece of art. This piece is a perfect talking point for parents with children at a pivotal age.

By signing this petition, we are asking the Overland Park City Council and the Mayor of Overland Park to keep and celebrate this sculpture at the Overland Park Aroboretum. Art of this nature can only help to empower children and their decisions.

I am a photography student and I appreciate art. I would be a shame to deprive us of viewing this entire beautiful expressive collection.

The people trying to get the statue removed are doing it for an unrelated matter. If those people have problems with their children sexting it is their responsibly to talk to those kids.

This sculpture sends a message that everyone today needs to hear. If a parent is offended by it, perhaps they should focus their energy on preventing their own children's involvement in such a culture rather than fighting to have the artwork removed.

Art is art.....Its not for an individual to tell us what we consider art. There are NUDIST families with kids all across america, Children see thier parents naked at 4 and 5 years old in bathrooms of every city in america. We show MOVIES with photographs and drawings of erect penises and vagina in public schools across the country as "sex education". I see no reason why a peice of art could be any more innapropriate that a sex education film.
